chosing uni course

im currently a y13 deciding what to do and where to go for uni and im freaking out pls help!! my alevels are fashion textiles, fine art and english literature.
im really interested in costume design and have been looking at studying in places like wimbledon, bournemouth and rose bruford, but i am aware that these unis are quite competitive to get into and im not sure if i have enough experience in costume design to be able to get in
on the other hand im also thinking it might be more beneficial for me to do a course like english or film studies that is more well known, and continue art and costume design on the side by joining societies and such.
if anyone has any advice id be so grateful!

Hi there, @rosabpsssssss 🙂 I highly recommend going for Open Days if you are able to. This is a great way to get a feel for the university campus, course and you get to speak to current students and tutors! Another option is to message past students who have been through these courses to find out more about their experience. In regards to film and costume design industries, there are many different technical roles within these industries and many people try to get some experience first via internships/ assisting work. I think it depends what you are specifically looking to do as a career and what you discover your strengths to be along the way. I hope this helps! 🙂
Kingston University also offers a Film Making BA that you may want to consider 😉

Hiya, I hope that you're well. I'm a Graphic Design student at Norwich University of the Arts and totally know how it feels to be stuck trying to decide on a degree!

My top tip would be to request a prospectus from a variety of universities (I think I got about 12 even though I knew half of them I definitely wouldn't be applying for), this is a great way to be able to read about course content from a few different courses in a few different universities. You can find our prospectus here where you can request one for free. Alternatively, we have information on all of our courses here: Norwich Uni Arts courses.

Our prospectus is a great way to find out where our courses can lead you in the future. Alongside this, our open days give you the chance to chat with current students and get a feel for life on a creative campus.

Good luck in choosing a course, I know it can be daunting. Happy to answer any questions.

Hello :elefant:
I remember being in exactly the same position as you are now, trying to decide whether to study English or history or classics as an undergraduate as I loved them all so much and didn’t want to end either course! (I plumped for English in the end by the way!) but it is such a hard decision to make!
I would reiterate the advice the other reps have given, definitely go to open days for the universities you are interested for both costume design as well as English and film studies. During the open days you will get a sense of the university atmosphere, how you feel there and this can give you a super idea of if you think you would like to study there. Also at the open day you can speak to the tutors of the courses you are considering - does this then affect your decision, following the course content information would you like to study the course more or less than you did?
Also, the open days will give you the chance to meet the students union team who can tell you amongst other things, about the clubs and societies at the uni and if there isn’t one that relates to costume, if you could start one up.
One thing I would stress though is don’t go to study a course because you think it is better known/ has more kudos etc study what you are genuinely interested in, and motivated to study. Think about where your passion lies. This way you will do yourself justice, get better marks and if at the end of the course you decide to follow a certain career path your degree hasn’t equipped you for per se you can easily catch up by another form of training or work experience etc, lots of people do more vocational training after a degree. The degree in English will provide you with so many transferable skills that you will be invaluable but if you would rather study costume design do,
I hope this helps, good luck with your decision,
