The Student Room Group

is going straight into second year at university difficult?

I'm in S6 looking into my options for university, I found a HNC that would allow me to apply for my second year at university but I'm concerned about what the transition would be like. Anyone have experience doing this? what was it like for you dealing with the university workload and making friends when everyone already has established friend groups?

Hi there,

I have not experienced this, but hopefully I can put some of your concerns at ease.

For me, the transition from sixth form to first year was a big change, but it wasn't too difficult to get the hang of. I then found that second year was just a level above this. If you're completing a HNC, which seems to be the equivalent to a first year (and I am assuming just as challenging), then I think your experience would be similar. The range of skills you will gain from a HNC would also be extremely useful, so don't discredit those in helping to make your transition easier.

In terms of making friends, it all depends. Many people are open to meeting new people, no matter how established their groups are, but it can definitely be daunting to be the one trying to approach them. As long as you are willing to put yourself out there, try new things, and socialize, you should be just fine with finding friends. I have just returned from a year abroad myself, and it is quite daunting to be with a new group of people. A lot of them are very nice, and are willing to include others, so I think you should be just fine. It just takes some time!

Best of luck,

Joining the second year is not easy. People have made friends-groups so it can be hard. However, there are lots of social clubs so join some of them and people from all years will be attending. Whether its football or stamp collecting, you will find a few societies you can join.
In my experience the students with HNCs wiped the floor with the students who had started at 1st year. HNC/Ds had to excel at their course to progress, none of this '1st year doesn't really count' slacking.
