PostGrad Loan- Receiving the full amount

Hi, I am a part-time distance learner about to start year 2 of an MA. I had the full amount of loan approved last year, but this years fees have been fixed at a lower rate than last year. Can I receive the 'surplus' after the fees are paid for supplementary items, ie travel, books etc?

Hi there. Can you confirm the name of the course you are studying? Thanks, Leah.

Hi Jane,

Can you confirm how long your course is normally so we can check this on the system? Are you receiving the Postgraduate Master's Loan from us for the course?

Thanks,
Claire

Hi

The course is 2 years. Yes, I am receiving the loan from SFE.

Thanks. The SFE masters loan is not a Tuition Fee loan. It's a loan to help with the total cost of your postgraduate studies. So, you can use it however you want to use it. Thanks, Leah.

Ok thanks, so how do I request the balance of the loan. Currently the payments have only been set up as per Lancs Uni request of two payments this year of 2 x £2745, totalling £5490, and I have been approved by SFE for £6084 this year.

Could you clarify what you mean by requesting the balance? We would pay you directly, the same way as we paid in the 1st year.

So, you would get a total of £6084 this year as you have stated, and this is paid directly to you in 3 instalment's per year. We base our payments dates on the term dates provided by the university. You get 1 payment for the start of each term (3 terms per year).

Thanks, Leah.

Hi

This year the Uni have only asked for 2 payments of 2 x £2745, totalling £5490 this year. Not three payments as they asked for last year. So I have a 'surplus' that has already been approved (6600-5490) which I don't need to use for fees.

We don't deal with university payments for postgraduate. We are unable to change the schedule of the payments for the postgraduate loan. If you need to discuss the payment of the Tuition Fees, you will need to speak with university directly.

Again, if you are using your loan to pay the Tuition Fees, anything left over can be used however you would like. If you want to request less of the loan, you would need to complete a change of circumstances to request this. Thanks, Leah.

Hi Jane,

Yes, you can if you want.

Since the Postgraduate Loan is paid directly to yourself it's entirely up to you to decide how to use it.

So, if you want to keep the surplus then that's fine.

Thanks, Graeme

Hi, Uni have come back to me with the following response :-
'You have a Postgraduate Masters Loan with Student Finance. All payments are made to you directly and not to the University. If you have a query about your loan amount, please contact Student Finance.'

I'm going round in circles here, and my first payment is due tomorrow.
Where I'm trying to get to is to receive 2 payments of £3042, one for 4th Oct, and £3042 for 10th Jan 2025.
Uni wants 2 payments of £2745, one in Oct and one in Jan 25 only, not 3 payments as per last year.
I would like the balance of my agreed loan of £6084 ie £594 paid to me asap for 'supplementary costs' associated with my Masters.
Can you tell me how I can make this happen please?

FYI - current SFE payment schedule and amounts, plus the current Uni invoice is being send separately due to this message being so long.

Regards

Hi Jane,

We don't have account access over social media. We would suggest calling the Postgraduate number so we can check this for you on 0300 100 0031. We're open till 8pm tonight.

Thanks,
Claire
