Dorm room allocation at Corpus Christi, Oxford

Hello,
I am sure the answer is no but no harm in confirming. My daughter has been assigned a dorm room in one of the older buildings at Corpus Christi. All they have given her is an address but no other details as to the size or any other amenities that are included in the room. It is not an ensuite room but there is no information on how many students will be sharing the bathroom.

I am assuming there is no process to request a change of room into their more modern building with ensuite option. I have seen some students do not really care for the kind of room and ensuite options whereas some others do.

But I would believe we can ask for more details of the accommodations rather than just an address.

Thanks.

Very unlikely they’ll let you change - they can hardly write to another student and tell them their en-suite is suddenly being taken away or write to all the freshers and start negotiating swaps, as it would cause chaos.

The older colleges have limited en-suite facilities and they tend to go to older years who get more choice about where they live.

They probably won't let you change unless it is for accessibility reasons. I was allocated a similar room and got changed to an ensuite, but this is because the college missed my accessibility requirement when assigning rooms and had to fix that. However, there is no harm in asking for more details! From what I remember the first year standard rooms are still pretty nice and usually larger than ensuites.

Ask the college (porters, domestic bursars and so on are usually helpful with enquiries), but please bear in mind that, because of the age and nature of the buildings in many colleges, en-suite facilities are not standard. Modernisation may not be possible because te buildings are Listed and/or their design makes modernisation difficult. Living in a very old building can be part of the Oxford thing.
