Exeter medicine

Hi,

I desperately want to study at Exeter, however, my end of year 12 exams went horribly. In terms of predicted grades, they only took the end of year exams into consideration. I have been predicted BBC. I do chem bio and maths and have been predicted the c in chemistry. It’s frustrating as I have gotten A’s in chemistry before, and so I at least should be predicted ABB. I was so close to an A in one of my biology exams ( 4 marks off) and yet I am predicted a B. My ucat also went horribly and I got 1860. I am a contextual applicant however, I believe my chances are slim in terms of getting into med school, let alone Exeter. What is the best solution for this? I really want to do medicine and I feel like my whole world has crashed in such a short span of time.

I think based on the UCAT result alone you're probably looking at applying in a gap year for most medical schools.

For Exeter specifically I believe typically to be invited to interview even as a contextual applicant you need to be predicted A*A*A or A*A*A* and be in the top three deciles of the UCAT.

However, in year 2022, the lowest ucat score that was invited to interview was1840

I suspect they would have had high A-level predictions to increase their shortlisting score based on the Exeter scoring matrix though.

That said, if you're likely to reapply in a gap year anyway not much harm applying anyway.

Would I have a better chance if I apply for foundation year medicine at another uni? Other than a gap year which I am considering, is there any other solution?

You could look for unis which don't put much emphasis on the UCAT, although you'd also need to look for ones that don't consider predicted grades or get those to be pulled up I guess?

I think I can get my predicted grades pulled up. I am considering the university of central Lancashire as it is new. I am not sure as to whether I stand a chance though. May I have someone else’s opinion?

And I am considering Bangor, Keele (although my ucat grade isn’t good enough) and Sunderland

Don't choose them based on arbitrary reasons like it being new or not - your assumption seems to be that new medical schools are less competitive than old ones, when in fact statistically most of the newer medical schools are harder to get into.

Look at the actual shortlisting methodologies of the medical schools and see which ones score UCAT as a smaller proportion and don't score and/or consider predicted grades if you don't get the predicted grades pulled so you are maximizing your chances
