Where to study Geology at University?

Hiyaa, first post! Just started year 13 and got my predicted grades which will be put on my UCAS application. My grade predictions aren’t what I was hoping for but unfortunately my teachers won’t budge. My predicted are AAC, the two A’s in Geology and Combined English, and the C in Physics.

I’m particularly worried about the C as my tutor said that lots of universities wouldn’t even consider giving me an offer based off my predicted grades, so even if I do get my grades up in the real A Level exams, I wouldn’t have had good offers in the first place.

I want to apply ambitiously for atleast two out of five of my options as Geology is pretty niche so I thought it’d be worth a shot. These two ambitious options would be Durham and St Andrews, but after what my tutor has said and seeing my predicted grades, I’m now thinking there’s no point applying because it’ll just be a waste of two applications. Can anybody perhaps give me some advice on this? If you got an offer from Durham or St Andrews, what was your offer like? Do you think I’d have a chance? And how detrimental is that C? Or would they perhaps value a good personal statement so I can redeem myself?

I’m also stuck on my other choices. My tutor said I should aim low because of my predicted grades. I’m considering Leeds, Exeter, Aberdeen, Leicester, Bristol, Keele, Royal Holloway, etc. and pretty much every other University which offers Geology in the UK, excluding Oxbridge because then I would need A Level Maths, which I don’t have.

Would be great to hear some thoughts and advice! And perhaps other people’s experiences with getting offers in this subject! Thanks!

Geology isnt that competitive - so its probably worth having at least one AAA choice (just be prepared for No), two AAB choices and two ABB/BBB choices. Any course with a work placement or study abroad would be a big plus. And, don't get over focussed on 'big Unis' - Unis like Bangor and Plymouth are 'good' for Geology (btw, RHUL isn't known for any STEM subjects), and you may also find Earth Sciences courses are worth looking at not just Geology.

Thank you, I’ll probably cross RHUL off my list. As for the “AAA” choice, I’m not really sure what that would be. The standard offer for Geology at St Andrews and Durham is both AAB iirc but those are my most ambitious choices. Aberdeen is probably gonna be my safety net at BBC. I’m just a bit worried I won’t get offers in the first place. I also did core maths my first year but I only got a B so I doubt that’ll bring any grade requirements down.

Southampton has a pretty strong geology course although it might be a reach with the C in physics (although they may make you an offer for the foundation year if not  ).

I did have a little look at Southampton but I’m under the impression that they are better with things like marine kind of geology there!

They do have a fair bit of marine options I think (particularly in 4th year) but it covers all the usual core geology areas too

Also what is bad about marine geology options?

Nothing bad about it at all!!! Just not something I’m interested in pursuing. And yesyes they do cover all the standard core geology stuff too however if it is up to me, I’d rather choose to go to a university which has a geology course which ties in closer with what I want to do! :-)

What are your particular interests in geology? That might help with recommendations

I think I’d like to go into mining geology. :-)

Also hate to be a pain but I’m just wondering about something grade related again. I’ve just been looking over grade requirements, and I qualify for contextual offers. At St Andrews it says to be considered, I’d need to meet the minimum requirements, which is ABB. However, I have AAC. Are these equivalent at all? Or does it not work like that? Not sure whether to apply or not because they say I need ABB to be CONSIDERED. Thank you!

As above generally geology/earth sciences is somewhat undersubscribed so being within a grade of the standard offer for a couple of aspirational choices is probably fine. Note though it's likely if you are made an offer it'll be the standard offer so you'll need to work on preparing to hopefully get a B in the final exam

Well Southampton does have some modules in basin analysis in final year. But besides that, look at the programmes at Exeter in the Cornwall Campus specifically (which used to be the Cambourne School of Mines). I believe Liverpool also has/had some strengths in that area?

Thank you so much! I’ll have a look into it all
