Which uni to apply to for liberal arts

hi, these are the unis i’m thinking of applying to, to study liberal arts:

uni of manchester
durham
bristol
royal holloway
kings college london
exeter
nottingham
warwick
york
sussex

if someone could advise about which of these is good for the subject (my main interests are in classical studies, film/tv studies, theology, modern languages, history and the like.) that would be much appreciated.

also, which of these is best for student life, access to facilities/shops, accommodation (do any of these have self-catered ensuite that isn’t super expensive), etc? honestly i’m not bothered about night life but i would like a uni/city that has stuff like gigs, events and stuff that students can go to also.
many thanks

Each of these Unis will be offering different LA degrees - different subjects, different degree structure different major/minor subject combinations, different study abroad options, and different entry requirements.

You need to do some research into each degree and work out what interests you - no-one else can do this for you. Then you need to go to some Open Days, listen to the subject presentations, ask questions, talk to current students about pros/cons, and then decide on your 5 choices. And in case you hadn't worked this out already, London and Bristol are your most expensive choices, Durham and Warwick wont be cheap, and Sussex / York are probably the nicest places to live.

Hello,

It's great to hear you're interested in studying at Royal Holloway.

You can find out more about our Liberal Arts course here, as well as information about student life here. You may also find it helpful to chat with a current student to find out more about their experience of Royal Holloway, accommodation and our facilities.

We hope this helps!

Best wishes,
Royal Holloway, University of London

Hi!
LA student at Notts here! I've just chosen my modules and saw all of the things you are interested in on the module list! There's a huge variety of accommodation offered and some great shops not far from campus (and even closer to off campus accommodation! I think there's an open day soonish - there really is no substitute for looking around in person!
ps. great to see people interested in this less well known course
pps. the Nottingham campus is gorgeous!!

Hi there,

It's great to hear that you're interested in studying at the University of York!

You can find out more about our Liberal Arts course on our website. It sounds like you're interested in languages, so have you considered one of our Liberal Arts with a language courses:

If you don't fancy studying a language as part of your degree course, you could still have the opportunity to study or work abroad.

As for student life, York is a lovely city to live in small enough that it will quickly feel like home, but big enough that there's always something going on...

Food shops

On campus, we have two convenience supermarkets where you can easily pick up your essentials

If you need a bigger supermarket, there are a couple of options:

The Foss Islands retail park is a short walk from the Huby Court bus stop on the U1 bus route. Here, there is a Morrisons, Waitrose and B&M.

The Aldi in Fulford is ~40 minute walk from Campus West, or you could get the U3 to the Imphal Barracks bus stop which is just across the road

You could get food shopping delivered to campus, often flats will do a big order together and split the cost

Accommodation

We have a range of accommodation available on or near to our campus, including rooms which are self-catered. You can check out our full accommodation range on our website.

Student events

There's always lots to do in the city, from restaurants and bars, to history and art. There are several live music venues in York too, and if you want to attend a bigger event, we're only a short train ride from larger venues in Leeds. On campus, we have over 200 student-run societies for you to join, and our 10 undergraduate colleges run regular events to help you settle in and meet new people throughout your time at York.

If you'd like to know more about life at York, check out our student blogs and our @UoYstudentvlogs YouTube channel!

I hope this helps with your decision! - Hannah 😀
