Nightlife at Penryn Campus

Hello can anyine give any insighr into the general vibe on Nightlife at Penryn and in Falmouth. What students union events are there for this sort of thing?
I am interested in Zoology and looking a few uni's - I'm just not sure if this is just too remote for me.
Thanks

Hi Anonymous,

Despite Penryn and Falmouth being comparatively small towns, there is no shortage of events and nightlife. Students typically go to Falmouth for nightlife as it is busier and has clubs, bars and pubs as well as venues that regularly have live music events such as the Cornish Bank and Princess Pavilion. Also, during the summer months, Gyllyngvase beach is a great place to watch the sunset and have a picnic or a bbq.

Penryn is quieter but there are nice, cosy pubs and restaurants and the Student Union and the campus also regularly hosts events. You can check out some of the events taking place on campus on the events page (https://fxplus.ac.uk/events-on-campus/), the Student Union page (https://www.thesu.org.uk/) or on instagram (@foodanddrinkoncampus).

I studied BSc Conservation Biology and Ecology at the Penryn Campus which shares a department and modules with the Zoology course if you have any more questions about what its like to study there

It is quite poor. You have to make your own fun. The clubs are limited and pretty bad. People go to them for a bit in 1st year then give up as they just aren't what I'd call "a good night out". No student union events really. I would say this university isn't for you if you are not into surfing/cycling/running because that is pretty much most of the entertainment. The student union is poor with very few events on, there is very little to no student culture about the campus and I can't recall any event that was fun to go to, organised by the university.

In response to this comment, I'm a current PhD student at the Penryn Campus and have studied here since my own undergraduate degree in Zoology. This has not been reflective of my experience, and I've been involved in lots of different student societies and social events in my years here. As with many aspects of university, your mileage may vary, and what constitutes 'a good night out' will be highly variable from person to person. However, Falmouth has a great range of pubs and bars, cinemas such as the Phoenix and Poly, and music venues such as the Cornish Bank. Living in Cornwall definitely offers an alternative student lifestyle compared to a big city destination, but I don't think that it's a downside. I've had lots of amazing weekends at local gigs, doing pub quizzes, going to house/flat parties, or with a few beers warming up around a fire after a sea swim watching the sunset on the beach. If you want to go to a multi-storey club until 5am in the morning, it isn't the place for you, but it definitely offers a lot more than just 'surfing/running/cycling' (and I know this because I personally don't do any of these things!)

It's pretty crap. We have a Wetherspoon so that's always a win but otherwise we have Grapes (bit ****) and Mangos (massive spiking problem. Not even just drink spiking but needles too. My flatmate got jabbed with a needle amd ended up collapsing from the drug) and a few scattered bars if u like live music Cornish Bank is pretty good.

I'm not really one for nightlife but I have a lot of friends/flatmates who are and there are a decent amount of events people do. People in Packsaddle usually host a party every month or so, drinking at the beach, etc. Get a group of friends, make a poster, think of a theme (we usually have a lot of 90s nights/60s/Halloween/ect), send a text to the uni flat group chat, get some speakers and alcohol, and host ur own.
