Is irony dying?

I know that maybe internet dating isn't the best place the judge this, but it's full of plastic insta type people talking about emotional availability, doing 'inner work' and the like, whilst posing with poncy food. Talking how they spend weekends in an unbelievable fashion. The pretense is ubiquitous and alien. Ok to balance it I can look at someone like Garron on youtube and see irony alive and well but does anyone feel that irony is nearly dead in this world? People aren't down to earth anymore and this goes hand in hand with irony.
I don't think you know what "irony" means.

Could you help us by defining what you think it means and then maybe we could go from there...?

I know it's not overly prevalent in people who talk about the likes of 'inner work' 'growth mindset' or 'emotional availability'. I also know it accompanies a grounded realism about the limitations of earthly life. Which is a British sensibility which is dying and being replaced with something vaguely transatlantic.

I note the grown ups are in the room again. Good to see, we would be lost without such wise and regal judgement. They are so free of condescension and self-regard too. That was just an example of an ironic comment, by the way.

I can't understand a word you're saying. 😕
On the weight of evidence provided, no.

Ironically, by giving an example of sarcasm and thinking it's irony, you have also given an example of irony, albeit unwittingly.

Irony

noun

1.

the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
"‘Don't go overboard with the gratitude,’ he rejoined with heavy irony"

If internet dating is "full of plastic insta type people", why are you spending your time on dating websites?

I tried the bumble app as someone on here recommended it. But you can't replicate anything authentic from real life on it. So yes I am quitting

Simply saying the opposite of what you mean, especially in a critical way is sarcasm, not irony. It's a fine line that not everyone appreciates.

To continue this pedantic argument, the official definition clearly shows I was using irony.

As I said, it's a fine line that many don't appreciate, even when they look it up in a dictionary.

This gives a decent explanation, with examples.

If by "pedant" you mean "not prepared to accept inaccuracies", fair enough.

Dating apps are pretty much last resort typa options... always best to look outside 🙂
It seems to me that many people now have chosen a side. Either 'I'm a winner' or 'I'm a loser because of society'.

Whereas not so long ago, the feeling might have been closer to 'We're all pretty much equal. Our own talents might take us a little further'. I suggest that it is much easier for irony to healthily flourish in a society that has a foundation of feeling fairly equal. Because otherwise irony becomes a stick to beat the less fortunate with.

You've got the winners, losers and those who abide by the steady line in the flow of life. The latter are the true successors, they don't have to be winners. They have less to lose, but more to win. :pizza:
