University is a scam

Why are students obsessed with getting a degree when universities don't teach you any proper skills other than essay writing?

University is important for specific jobs (dentistry/medicine etc) but unless you want a job that requires a degree you're better off doing anything else, which is better than getting into debt. Most employers don't look more favourably at someone because they have a piece of paper. It's good that schools and colleges want you to do well in life but they shouldn't focus all their efforts on university as if it's the be all and end all.

There are more cost effective options -

Starting a business
Degree apprenticeship
Getting a job and working your way up

There will always be jobs that require a degree but apart from those, university is just a money-making scam.

You make a fair point, but universities are not a scam. In an ever specialised economy in the information age, we need more educated people than before. The problem as I see it is that universities are providing educated people but not necessarily with the skills they need. That said, having gone to university, you have shown you can acquire new skills and learning which still counts for a lot. The problem as I see it is that too many businesses are not prepared to invest in training for their workforce.
I understand the tuition fees encourages students to view their degree as simply a commodity that they purchase but the value of a good education far exceeds the few thousand it adds on to your yearly salary.

Mebby they want to learn stuff rather than get 'skills'.
I learned a lot in uni inc a lot about how to run my business and as a Scottish student I didn't walk away with a mountain of debt. Rather than it all being a uniform scam I think a lot of students need to take a bit more responsibility for their plans and choices..
