Hi, I'm going to start my 1st year of uni next week and I want to get a part time job ready and I have been having difficulty finding useful and reliable sites that could be of help. Could I ask for a few suggestions. Thank you.

It’s awesome that you’re already thinking ahead about getting a part-time job before starting uni! Balancing work and studies can be tricky, but with some good planning, it's definitely possible. At Salford, we’ve got a fantastic careers service that helps students with everything from finding part-time jobs to CV writing, mock interviews, and even specific advice on balancing work and study. I'd recommend seeing if your university has something similar - it can be a huge help. They might even have a portal or job board for on-campus roles, which are often more flexible around your timetable.
When it comes to reliable job sites, I’d suggest checking out websites like Indeed or even LinkedIn. Some of these sites focus on part-time roles for students, so they can be super useful. Additionally, LinkedIn can be helpful for finding internships or roles in your field, and you can build up your professional network early on. If you're looking for something on-campus or nearby, don't forget to look at your university’s own job board. Universities often hire students for roles in admin, the library, or as student ambassadors.
Also, don’t forget that part-time work can be more than just making some extra cash - it’s a great way to build up experience and skills that can boost your CV later on, especially when applying for internships or graduate roles. Balancing both studies and a job might seem a bit overwhelming, but by starting small (around 8 - 10 hours a week), you can find a good rhythm without sacrificing your academic work.
Good luck with your job search and your first year at Uni - you’re already ahead of the game by thinking about this! Arslan – University of Salford Student Representative

Try indeed. There are a lot of jobs on there. Some companies (e.g. mcdonalds, tesco, lidl etc have their vacancies on the careers section on their website, and you have to apply on there. Mcdonalds take on a lot of students.

Hiya!
It's great to hear you're looking for a part-time job! Finding one that you enjoy, that’s well paid, and that understands you're a student with limited availability can be difficult sometimes but don't give up hope! 🙂
I would recommend getting in contact with your Career’s Team at the university (if you haven’t done so already) and looking at the university website for student jobs. By speaking to the career's team, they can inform you on any jobs within the university and possibly what's available in the area. In addition, the jobs advertised with the university may seem more lenient if you haven’t got any previous work experience and understand the prior commitments you have as a student (e.g. attending lectures, reading weeks, additional readings etc.) For example, at De Montfort University we have Student Ambassador jobs (which is one of my part time jobs) and this role is incredibly flexible, optional and enjoyable as I have had some incredible opportunities presented to me through this role. This is what I would highly recommend if your university offers something like this! Another role, which I am starting soon is being a Front runner and this is a contract of 10 hours a week and again should be a great opportunity during my studies and to add to my CV, perhaps have a look if your university does anything similar to this.
Unitemps is a great website - they are university owned and operate from numerous universities across the UK; (being an ambassador at DMU is through this company) perhaps you can see if Unitemps have a branch at your university 😃 Besides Unitemps, I would also recommend looking at Linkedin, Indeed and Google. I would also recommend, for you to follow a few local business on their social media - as sometimes they may advertise a job on here.
If you’ve recently moved to a new city or town, it might be worth walking around with copies of your CV just in case you spot any “help wanted” signs. Just the other day, when my friend and I went out for coffee, we noticed a "help wanted" sign in the window. It said you could either drop off your CV in person or email it, so you never know! And by Being prepared with printed copies of your CV, it could save you a job and potentially speed things along. Perhaps you could even ask to leave one with them in case future opportunities arise. It can feel a bit intimidating, but the worst they can say is no, and I’m sure they’ve been in a similar position before! 🙂
From my friends' experiences as students some of them don't work, some work in hospitality and retail jobs, some work in areas that they want to pursue in the future and some just work when they are back home during the holidays. You can always ask around too, see what other students do for work and perhaps they are aware of any vacancies
I hope this has helped -Maddie, Third year Health and Well-being in Society student at De Montfort University

I see you have already had some excellent advice! I'd love to add a bit of my own.
A great place to begin looking for part-time jobs is at your university campus. You could check out if they are hiring student ambassadors, which is an excellent job to fit around your university schedule. Other jobs could include bars, cafes, stores or restaurants on campus.
You could also venture off campus for employment opportunities. Personally, I know other students who work in bars, restaurants, cafes, grocery shops, hotels and more.
I recommend using Indeed as it's one of the largest job sites. I also highly recommend the job site 'Handshake'.
If your university hosts a part-time jobs fair, attend it. There may be a list of current job openings, alongside local employers being present at the event. The university may also provide assistance for improving your CV, this can be a great chance to increase your likelihood of being invited to an interview!
I hope this helped, please feel free to ask me any questions, -Sophia (Business and Management)
