Why do universities charge tickets for Fresher's Week?

Why do universities charge tickets for events during Fresher's Week?

It's a rip off. People are already paying enough for tuition fees and now they're charging tickets just to look round subject societies and attend events. They should be free.

Some uni societies also charge membership which is just further evidence that it's just a scam.

Welcome to the world - where stuff costs and your parents don't pay for everything!
I know that venues charge for freshers tickets - and I agree these are mostly a ripoff.

Hadn't heard of unis themselves charging to look around freshers fairs - that's pretty odd.

I understand that but I don't think university is worth it.

Hi,
Be really careful with these tickets many are ripoffs! 9/10 times u can grab the tickets online or at the door and not these ‘freshers wrist bands’ scammers try to sell. My friend paid £80 in his first year just out of pure fear that he would miss out on events!
Freshers events on campus are free here at Manchester Metropolitan? Where are you at university?
Best wishes

Same, I was under the impression it was scabby 3rd parties who always tried this rip off ticket/band stuff, I'd be surprised to see a uni doing it directly.

I also dunno why anyone would really expect uni societies to be 100% free, they're generally not official.

Yeah, there's nearly always been some fees and charges for joining a society. But the fairs are recruitment events put on by the SU and the soc's themselves. I've no idea why they would charge for that.

Maybe some rando third party thing?
