Further Maths more enjoyable than Maths (at level 2)

Volunteer Note: a long and significant (but not rule breaking) discussion took place in another thread and members of the volunteer team felt the conversation deserved its own space to continue rather than losing sight of the hurt/heal game the discussion was originally in.

I agree that it shouldn’t be added because its not a GCSE, however I do agree with you that it was far more enjoyable that GCSE Maths- hence why I take points from GCSE Maths cos it bored me compared to FSMQ stuff even though I love Maths 🙂

If you were bored by GCSE Maths it is not the subject's fault at all, it's down to poor teaching. Our department's GCSE teaching has been described as passionate and inspiring! No need for FMaths and FSMQ if GCSE is taught properly and the whole spec covered well.

Fair enough in that case. For me, I actually found some of the back end difficult questions quite fun to complete in iGCSE maths but the FSMQ was good.

iGCSE is easier than GCSE ...

It was taught properly thank you, my teachers were amazing but there’s nuance to my experience which I dont feel the need to disclose so Id appreciate it if you respect my opinion as I do yours 🙂

Yeah I liked the last questions on papers too 🙂 they actually made me think!

You weren't taught as well as you could have been if it was boring - no excuses!

I’ve done regular GCSE papers and got full marks and don’t find that the case even though I was taught the iGCSE spec. Maybe it’s easier but I’ve often been told it’s harder

Did you mark them or a teacher?

Teacher.

I’ve got 100% in one real iGCSE paper but generally find them slightly more difficult.

So don't targert Maths because of your experience - it's unfair! If anyone told me their lesson was boring for whatever reason I would be taking their teacher to task.

It’s not unfair, it’s my opinion which is what the game is based on, everyone has different experiences which is why opinions form. My teachers were amazing and very passionate about their subject, please stop disrespecting them without cause. You do not know my experience so please allow me to have my opinion 🙂

They aren't harder - no non-calculator paper. If a teacher does not teach GCSE they won't have access to the full mark scheme so won't mark accurately. It's not enough to get the question right.

If it wasn't the content or the teaching then it is unfair -

When did i say it wasn’t the content? The content didn’t challenge me which was why i got bored going over it again and again as I finished the content in year 9 but most of the rest of my class didnt as they were in different classes or had less enthusiasm. It really wasn’t the teaching however and i believe my opinion is very just 🙂

Your teacher should have given you extension work ... there's some amazing resources for that.. Did you do UKMT challenges, NRICH problems including submitting your solutions.

I did have extension work, when I finished I did some work on fsmq or as level questions which i found very interesting and enjoyable. Yes I did do UKMT (senior in both years 10 and 11).

So why were you bored? Genuine question - did you subkmit solutions to NRICH?

Btw, a lesson cannot be graded good unless all students make progess.

I dont believe we did much on NRICH, I remember doing stuff on it in younger years but not in GCSE years. I believe all students were making progress, my teacher was very attentive to making sure we all understood and had work for our level. I wasn’t bored when doing the fsmq content, but that’s not GCSE maths as you correctly point out- therefore when i did lessons on revising GCSE content I did not feel challenged on most of the questions.
