Law at UCL - yr 13 - undergraduate

Hey guys,

I want to study law at university.

I originally wanted to apply to Cambridge, King’s College London, Durham, Leicester and Surrey because my school is forcing us to have backup unis that have grade requirements of AAB - ABB or lower.

I need some advice, I’ve heard Durham is quite racist and classist so I was thinking of switching it to either Brisol or UCL, but UCL mentions that your GCSE grades have to be 6 or above.

My Grades are 8,8,7,7,7,6,6,6,5 and I’m not sure I’ll be able to get in.

My A-level predicted grades are A*,A,A.

I haven’t done the LNAT yet but during my practices I get around 20/42.

I was wondering whether it was worth trying to apply for UCL and whether there were any other universities for Law that have quite serious students (as I did hear some negative horror stories about Leicester) I just want to be in an environment with focused individuals if you know what I mean. And I also haven’t been able to find much information about what Surrey is really like.

UCL only require a 6 in English language and maths for the standard offer. They place a heavy emphasis on the essay section of the LNAT but the average offer holder score in a past cycle was 29 on the MCQ section (27 for contextual students). I wouldn’t base your opinions on universities solely off of ‘horror stories’, as opinions are subjective. You might go to Durham and really enjoy it or you may see the stereotypes play out in front of your eyes. The only way to truly know is to experience these universities for yourself. The same goes for your assumption of ‘serious students’ being at these universities. There will be serious and unserious people everywhere you go in life. Try not to let that dictate your views on different establishments. It tends to be the case that at more rigorous academic institutions, you will find more disciplined students, but this is not always the case. You also can’t control the cohort that any of these universities select for your year of entry. You may apply to what you believe is a university full of serious students, only to find out that everyone on your course lacks discipline, focus and motivation. Similarly, you may end up at a university you deem less serious only to find out that everyone on the cohort is in fact highly motivated, disciplined and focused. As for Surrey, I don’t know much about the law course, but generally, I’ve heard positive reviews. Take that with a pinch of salt though.
