HSBC student bank account

Been with hsbc since I was 18. I applied for the student account and was rejected because of failing credit check to my suprise. I checked with Experian and my credit is good, borderline excellent and that I was rejected probably due to not being on the electoral roll. I literally just applied to my new uni address one and was just taken off my parents address. Is there anyway to dispute this with the bank?

They say that they give overdrafts etc to students but in reality they haven’t in my experience measured up to their promises. My DC has a student account with them and is in her fourth year of study. She’s never even been £1 overdrawn, has never had a standing order rejected but wanted an overdraft facility just to cover the week between her rent going out and her student loan being received. Demand rejected. She thought it was a mistake so tried again through the app and it was rejected again. She’s on the electoral roll, is doing a degree that almost guarantees employment with an above average starting salary the moment she qualifies but nothing doing. She went into her branch to get answers and apparently it’s her credit rating, but like you it’s excellent so just a non answer, although they did say that the fact that she asked twice will have shot her rating for the next 3 months. . Why? I don’t know .
I really wouldn’t take as gospel the promises of HSBC for student advantages and if it wasn’t for the fact that my DC has only a short while left to go she would be changing banks..There’s no point at the moment because to be eligible for other banks student advantages the account has to have been open for 6 months so it’s just not worth it. But if I was you I would seriously consider going elsewhere!

Its ridiculous. It’s literally just the fact I’m inbetween electoral rolls as I’ve just moved for university. Like your DC, never ever been in my overdraft even by a penny , never had a standing order rejected, always paid everything on time and I’ve had student accounts with hsbc during my previous degree, but just because I’m waiting to be put on my new address electoral they’ve rejected me!! Ive never had an issue with hsbc but this has honestly put a damper on how i feel banking with them.

We are really disappointed with them. She banked with them in France as well, and when the personal banking branch was taken over by CCF she tried to close the account. Somehow very conveniently for them her banking details went off radar and it took us 6 months to get the couple of thousand euros she had on her account back. All the while they continued deducting monthly admin fees for a credit card she no longer had!! When we threatened to take them to the mediation services ( and luckily we had kept copies of all the letters and mails proving the request to close the account because they had blocked access to the app where all correspondence is stored) all of a sudden her money was transferred onto her new bank account. All trust I had in HSBC has flown out the window!

Think once I’m fully registered at my new address, it’s time to research other banks
