I’m sitting the senior maths challenge on Tuesday and ive never done ukmt before so idk what to expect . Is it worth revising for ? My teacher hasn’t explained anything he just said we’re doing it Tuesday and that’s it .

It's non-calculator and hard to revise for but some practice so you know the format would be good. Things like learning trig values, formulae and numerical tricks might be helpful. I think @DerDracologe has done this challenge before so might be able assist further.

You can pick up a a couple of past papers (and solutions) from ukmt or online questions at drfrost. It doesnt hurt to do a bit of practice beforehand, maybe open book/untimed if youre doing it for the first time, but unless youre going on to do a maths entrance exam dont worry too much about it. Its different from a level maths and largely based on gcse++ maths with a fair amount of problem solving.

Yeah I’ve done it twice in years 10 and 11 and got bronze and silver respectively. It is hard to prepare for as it’s mostly problem solving but doing practice helps. Also learning trig values, some geometry equations and some tricks for factors etc is helpful! Also read through the rules on past papers (available on the UKMT website) so you can understand the scoring system. Mathsaurus is a great YouTube channel for preparing (i plan to watch some of his videos the night before) and also i think he has a website with a course for prepping. A friend of mine did it and said she found it helpful. The thing is these challenges is you can learn tricks which mimic mathematical intuition i guess so if you’re not that good at problem solving reading solutions and doing courses like that can be good- i didnt find what i did of the course last year that helpful (admittedly very little as i lost interest in the format) as would rather try questions to practice but each to their own 🙂
