A Mix of Excitement, Adventure & New Beginnings - Freshers’ Week

Hey there 🤗

The greatest period of integration has just started, so if you’ve just arrived to Leicester fasten your seatbelts and sign up for some exciting events! 🚀

Freshers’ Week at De Montfort University is an experience like no other - it’s a whirlwind of activities, friendships, and discoveries that you’ll look back on fondly for years to come. Whether you're excited, nervous, or a little bit of both, here's what you can expect and how to make the most of this exciting chapter of your life 🤗

1. A warm welcome

From the moment you step onto DMU’s vibrant campus, you’ll feel the energy in the air. The university does an amazing job of making you feel welcome and at home 🏠

The campus will be buzzing with student ambassadors and staff ready to help you settle in. From moving into halls to finding your way around, there’s always someone to ask for help - so don’t hesitate! I remember feeling so lost on my first day, but I quickly learned that everyone else was in the same boat 🚤

2. Societies

This is your chance to dive into a huge variety of societies and clubs, from sports teams to creative groups, cultural societies, and more. It might feel overwhelming at first - so many stalls and options - but just take your time exploring what fits you best. Joining a society is one of the best ways to meet people with similar interests and really start to feel part of the DMU community 💁*♀️

My tip: Don’t be afraid to try something new! My friend a dance society, even though she had never danced before. It ended up being one of the highlights of her university life. You never know what you’ll discover about yourself 💃

3. Freshers’ fair and events

The Freshers’ Fair is the heart of the week - it's an explosion of freebies, discounts, and information. I came home with so many random but useful things (I still use the tote bag I got from the fair!) 🆓

In the evenings, the fun doesn’t stop. From themed club nights to chill movie marathons, DMU offers a variety of events. Even if you're not into partying, you’ll find something to do. I personally loved the alternative events like quiz nights - perfect for meeting people in a more laid-back atmosphere 🎲

4. Meeting new people

This is a big one, and it can be both exciting and daunting. Freshers’ Week is all about meeting new people from all over the world. Whether it’s your flatmates, course mates, or someone you bump into at an event, it’s a time to be open and social. Everyone is in the same position, looking to make friends, so don’t be shy! ☺️

One of my favourite memories was meeting my now-best friend during a random conversation in the campus café. You never know where you'll find your people! ☕️

5. Settling into your new routine

Amongst all the fun, Freshers’ Week is also a time to get used to your new surroundings. This is when you'll attend induction sessions, and start figuring out where your lectures will be held. It might seem overwhelming at first, but take it one step at a time, and don’t worry if you feel a bit lost. DMU has plenty of support in place to help you settle in smoothly 🏫

6. Take care of yourself

Lastly, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and non-stop activities, but don’t forget to take care of yourself. Freshers' flu is real (trust me on this!), so try to get enough rest, drink water, and eat well 🤧

Also, it’s okay if you don’t feel like going out every night—sometimes the best nights are the ones spent getting to know your flatmates over a cup of tea in your kitchen 🗣️

Freshers’ week is all about embracing the unknown, having fun, and laying the foundations for an amazing university experience. Don’t worry if everything doesn’t fall into place right away - give yourself time to adjust. Looking back, I wish I hadn’t stressed so much about making everything perfect from the start. The friendships, memories, and experiences will come naturally as you get settled into university life 👩*🎓

I hope it was helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can also chat with me orother students directly through The Ambassador Platform.
