Is chemistry degree really busy?

Hi Im a year 13 looking forward to studying chemistry in uni. I wanted to get a part time job whilst being a full time uni student. However i heard that science students spend a lot of times in lab and barely have free times to do part time jobs (lab at the weekdays and lab reports at the weekends). How busy is year 1&2 and am i able to squeeze time out for part time jobs?

Hello! 🙂
It's great you're interested in a chemistry degree!
I'm a second year Natural Sciences student and I'm taking modules in chemistry.
You are right in the fact that STEM degrees are usually some of the most busiest degrees in terms of contact hours, however you can definitely fit in a part time job.
Learning how to manage your time is a very important skill if you want to balance the two, but don't forget to take some time out to enjoy university too!
You'll usually have gaps between lectures/labs/workshops, make sure you use this time productively so you can do things you enjoy later on the day. Another thing I'd recommend, is to keep a note of when all your deadlines are, so you can plan and be prepared (don't over-commit to shifts during exam/deadline season!)
I hope this helps, please don't hesitate to ask questions if you have any!

There will be 1 or 2 lectures in the morning and 2-3 hours of labs every day except Wednesdays (sports day). You can get pt work for after 5pm or weekends. I used to work in M&S on Thursday evenings and Saturdays and it was not too hard.

You can defo fit in a part-time job, and there's also always the opportunity to do online tutoring which a lot of uni students do as it's less of a commitment and pays really well
