Oxford application colleges

Is there such thing as an “easier college to get into” or a “college with the highest acceptance rate”, I hear Mansfield has the most state school successful applicant as opposed to others that have a lot of private schoolers, is there any niche tip or something like this that I should be aware of when applying as a state schooler or should I just make an open application

Hi, there is definitely some colleges that accept more state school students. This is the oxford site that compares the state vs independent school intake if you want to compare the colleges: https://www.ox.ac.uk/sites/files/oxford/AnnualAdmissionsStatisticalReport2021.pdf (page 18)

Whilst some colleges do have higher acceptance rates due to there being more places / less applicants etc, I seriously doubt either factor should play into your choice of college. Similarly, I wouldn’t give a care whether the ratio of state school to private school students appears at a glance to be unfavourable. If you are the right fit for a place at Oxford, you’ll be given a place whether that is at the college you applied to or a college you were allocated (via “pooling”).

Of course, I would suggest using the college suggester to narrow down your options and apply to whichever college shows up and takes your fancy the most - it’s better to give yourself higher chances of ending up at a college that has preferable arrangements for you than making an open application and ending up at a college that meets fewer of your needs.

My daughter went to state school, she applied to Keble College, was interviewed by Mansfield, had a second interview with St Johns and received an offer from Mansfield. When we went to the open days we were told not to worry too much about which college you apply to as the one that is right for you will find you! There is an excellent video on this subject from an admissions tutor at Oxford:

They have a number of videos about how to apply and personal statements etc which are all well worth watching.

Not sure how much things have changed, but here's an up-to-date link https://www.ox.ac.uk/sites/files/oxford/AnnualAdmissionsStatisticalReport2024.pdf
