Radiography work experience

Hi everyone,

I'm currently in my 3rd year studying Business Information Systems, but for the past two years, I've been eager to change industries. Recently, I applied for an undergraduate degree in Diagnostic Radiography, starting in 2025, at the University of Salford and the University of Bradford, which will be funded by Student Finance England (SFE).

I understand that universities highly recommend having shadowing experience in a radiography department, but I’ve struggled to secure that kind of opportunity. However, for the past year, I’ve been shadowing a sports injury rehabilitator who is currently pursuing a master’s in physiotherapy. In my personal statement, I explained how this experience has helped me develop skills that I believe are relevant to diagnostic radiography.

My question is: Will this experience be considered sufficient by the university, or is it essential that I get shadowing experience in a radiography department? I’m concerned that even if I manage to arrange shadowing now, it might be too late for my application.

Any advice or insights would be much appreciated!

Hey @Jesus fbhc 🤗

It's great to hear you applied to Bradford! I'm going to pass on your enquiry to our faculty admin so I can get the correct answer to this for you. I'll be back in touch as soon as possible

Your work experience is great but shadowing will show unis that you understand what is involved in the job. Just a day or half a day in the radiography department is fine so don't ask for more than this. If you can't get in via official channels, start using your contacts. Does the person doing the physio masters have any contacts at hospital who might be able to help? Any friends, family or neighbours who work in healthcare? Do some research and see if you can find an email address for the head of radiography, etc. Expand you search to other hospitals. If all else fails, watch some 'A day on the life of a radiographer' videos on Youtube - they are usually produced by NHS trusts.

Edit - just to note that I accompanied by DD to uni open days for DR and all the unis said they like to see both shadowing experience and public-facing work/volunteering experience on applications.

Hello,

It is great to see that you have applied to the University of Salford and that you are seeking work experience to help strengthen your application.

In truth I wouldn't be able to confidently answer your query as it is unique to your situation. I would recommend getting in touch with our course enquiries team about this.

To email our course enquiries teams it would be [email protected] they take up to five days to respond to any email.

You can also give them a call on 0161 295 4545 between the hours of 10am and 4pm, Monday - Friday.

Best of luck with this,
Matt ~ Uni of Salford Rep

Hi, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, the person I shadow doesn’t have any contacts in the NHS, so I’ll need to keep searching. However, I was browsing The Student Room and noticed that some students, like myself, might be required to achieve a certain grade in our current course to get into radiography programs. Do you know if this is true? I’m currently on track for a 2:1 but could aim for a 1st if I focus.
Additionally, I have experience in public-facing roles, having worked in pharmacies and funeral homes. This has made me accustomed to speaking with people and showing empathy.

Email admissions at both unis and ask what are the entry requirements if you are applying as a current uni student.

Hey @Jesus fbhc

Thanks for your patience! The course leader got back in touch with me with the following response:
IYes, have a visit radiography department is recommended, if not you will also need to reflect on any similar experience and tailor it to the needs of a radiography career expectations.

I encourage the applicant to visit more than one department and speak with a radiographer to secure a visit/ shadow slot - instead of calling or emailing only.

Also, all applicants will need to pass an interview before an offer is made.

Hope this helps.

I have secured a clinical visit at the Radiology Department of Salford Royal Hospital, scheduled for December. Since I have already submitted my UCAS application, should I wait to mention this during the interview, or would it be advisable to update the admissions teams of the universities I applied to with this new information?

Hey @Jesus fbhc how are you?

Thank you for your patience. The lecturer has informed me that sure you can mention it during the interview, it is always an opportunity to sell oneself amongst other questions that will be asked.

However, you have to be successful at the application stage to move to the interview stage.

Hope this helps!

If you search the websites for your local hospitals or NHS trusts, there is often a page devoted to work experience with the contact details. Make sure you ask for a day of shadowing and not work experience (hospitals seem to be far more open to the former). Failing that, ask friends and family who might work in healthcare if they have any contacts in a radiography department.
