York MSc Computer Science online - not feeling it.

Hello, I am currently a student enrolled on the MSc Computer Science online at University of York but I am not enjoying it. I took up this place because a got a £10000 scholarship to cover the course fees. If I was paying myself I would definitely drop-out but because my course fees are being paid for me I feel an inclination to continue though it is really boring and like walking through treacle. I don't know whether to drop out or continue seeing as I am in such a privileged position to get the course for free basically. Another option is to only do the course to the PGCert or PGDip level and then drop-out, I don't know what to do for the best.

Hello,

I'm sorry you're not enjoying the course. Please talk to your tutors, they won't be angry or upset but will be able to guide you through what's best for you.

All the best with whatever you do, E.

Hi, I’m in the same course as you, and I can say that I’m really enjoying it, though it’s not easy at all. For me, however, the material is fascinating. I do have some previous experience, which might make it a bit easier for me, and this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. Yes, there are some challenges with this course, but I believe that would be the case at any university and with any degree.

If you decide to give it a chance, I strongly advise focusing on understanding the material, asking as many questions as you can, and looking for relevant lectures and practice materials online. Don’t give up, because I truly believe this degree will be worth it in the end.

If you realise it’s simply not for you, then talk to the student advice team—they might offer you some helpful guidance.

Good luck!

In my opinion change uni, this MSc is broken in almost every way. The courses are high level and if you are new to Computer Science you will really really struggle. You don't get any support or guidance from tutors and the assessments sometimes are not relevant with the taught content. What's worse is their marking and feedback which sometimes doesn't make any sense. Complaints do not work and they really don't care about the student experience. There are blogs, reddit reviews and student forums where you can check by yourself how it feels to study this MSc. Whatever you choose, good luck!

Dear university of york,

Instead of advising students to reach out to their tutors who won't be able to do much (from experience), perhaps it would be better to recognize the issues with this MSc and work towards improving them.
