Denied taking the EPQ

I applied for EPQ at my sixth form but wasn’t accepted, as they only had space for 30 people. What annoyed me though is that there were no entry criteria mentioned, so they must have randomly picked 30 people from everyone that applied. I’m taking 3 A levels but wanted to take EPQ too for more UCAS points as well as building my personal statement, but I’m worried now that my application won’t be as good as others who have done EPQ. Do universities take EPQ into account a lot when looking at applications?

And I should add too that for the application they didn’t even ask what we planned to do the EPQ on, or ask for our grades or anything, which makes me confused as to how they chose the people to do it
