Turing and SFE Grants

So my daughter is on year abroad and has been told she will get Turing grant and cost of living for this year as my income is under 25K. The amount she gets for the travel grant is £905 and that won't even cover one return flight as her one way flight just to get there cost 800. been told she will get a monthly cost of living payment (mobility Grant) from Turing too. We have paid out for Visas, police checks, mandatory health insurance that Uni overseas said she must have to study so its cost me 1000s which I have had to borrow. The Turing £905 travel grant is great but it doesn't cover costs so far so would she able to make a claim with SFE for these costs or because she gets Turing cost of living does that cancel the option out? I know if you don't get Turing you can get help with up to 3 flights and visa and medical costs etc, but not sure what happens if you get Turing Travel grant and cost of living, and don't want her to get in trouble by applying for both to top up if she can't

Hi Krk1999,

If a student is receiving funding from the Turing Scheme, then they cannot claim a payment for the same travel expense from both SFE Travel Grant and the Turing Scheme.

Thanks,
Calum

So realistically as she’s on maximum SFE maintenance loan is she better not taking the 905 travel grant from Turing? I read that you could apply to SFE to cover excess costs that Turing hadn’t covered as long as you’re not claiming for the same travel expense twice but I must have misunderstood this. The Turing grant rate for her destination is for one return flight up to a cost of 905, Her return flight alone cost more than 1200 and that was taking the longest cheapest flight with multiple stops. My understanding is that SFE offer grants for up to 3 flights (minus £303) and SFE also help towards visa and medical insurance costs. Her mandatory health care visas etc cost another 1500 so we’re currently at 2700 in costs. This would mean that the SFE option seems more helpful than a flat rate £905 from Turing.

Hi there,

So do you mean the student will cancel their Turing scheme? Have they spoke to the Turing scheme about cancelling their application?

Thanks, Drew

Hi no I don't mean she will cancel but it's all really confusing. The max Travel Grant from Turing is £905 which she has been granted. The uni have said that this is the max Travel grant they can offer to cover flights, she will also be entitled to the separate mobility grant as we earn under 25K. Her return flights at the start and end of the course exceed the max travel grant by about £500 (so she won't be able to come home during the holidays as its just too expensive) Before leaving she was sent an SFE travel claim form, and there are boxes for Visa and insurance costs ( this was not an option on the Turing Form). The Terms and conditions state you can't claim for the same cost from SFE if the Turing travel grant has covered it so does this mean she could claim for the visa and health insurance costs from SFE or does getting the mobility grant cancel that option out? Here's the bit in the terms I'm referring to- The Turing Scheme prohibits double-funding of placements abroad. This means that participants should not be funded twice for the same expense. Participants cannot use Turing Scheme funding to pay for assets (e.g., IT equipment) or services (e.g., travel) where a participant is, or expects to be, in receipt of funding provided by another source for the same assets or services. For example, if you are in receipt of a Turing Scheme travel grant, you are not allowed to apply for a travel grant via Student Finance England (and vice versa).
As part of the award of Turing Scheme funding, we will ask you to declare whether you are in receipt of any other sources of grant funding or whether you intend to apply for any other sources of grant funding. We will then assess whether this would be classed as double-funding for the Turing Scheme.
Participants can ‘top up’ funding where one source of funding does not meet the full costs of participation in the placement. For example, if travel is more expensive than the amount of funding provided by the Turing Scheme, participants can use funding from another source to cover the additional costs of travel, although this should not exceed the actual travel costs. Similarly, if the Turing Scheme cost-of-living grant does not cover the actual cost of living abroad, participants are allowed to make up the difference between the amount available to them and their total living costs through funding from other sources.

Hi there,

As long as you're not applying for the same stuff on Travel Grant and Turing it's okay.

Thanks,
Ross

Yeah the flights can be left blank on the form.

It can be uploaded online if that's what you're referring to? It would have to be uploaded to the student's account.

Thanks,
Ross

Is it for the 24/25 Academic Year?

I believe it's this one https://media.slc.co.uk/sfe/2425/ft/sfe_travel_abroad_expenses_form_2425_o.pdf
