My uni choice

I have achieved A*AA (maths is A* with physics and stats at A). I want to take a course in computer science and mathematics but am really struggling to pick 4 unis. I am eligible for a contextual offer to Manchester but already have my grades (achieved them this year), I assume this is fine and I will still receive the offer. If so Manchester will be my primary choice. For my other applications I've considered places like Birmingham and York but am really unsure. I'd prefer to go to a city campus but its not a must. I would like the uni life to be fun and safe with good prospects and plenty of places to shop etc, does anyone know of any unis I should consider?

With your results, I think you should consider UCL, Imperial or Queen Mary in London!

QMUL is not especially strong for CS as far as I'm aware and kind of average overall. Without FM Imperial and UCL may be a stretch (also UCL is not as strong as Imperial or other good CS courses like Edinburgh, Warwick, Southampton etc).

Without FM the maths joint honours side of things might limit you a bit more from some of the otherwise more obvious options. Edinburgh may still be an option though (and also have a fairly mathematical CS course anyway if you do CS or their flagship informatics course).

If you're looking mainly in the north/midlands, Loughborough might be worth exploring as they're generally quite good in STEM areas and have some notable specialisms in teaching maths at higher education level (i.e. they actually do research and put this into practice in how best to teach degree level students maths, across various courses - which would probably improve your experience of learning maths there ). Durham might be a potential option as well but could be a stretch without FM too. Likewise Warwick The downside would be those are not based in big cities.

Hi there,

Congratulations on those amazing grades!

The entry requirements for our BSc Computer Science course is AAA, including Mathematics, so I'm sure you would receive an offer from us. To get an idea of what studying Computer Science is like you could watch the following videos on our @UoYStudentVlogs YouTube channel:

You could also book onto one of our Campus Tours to have the chance to explore our campus and visit the city.

I hope this helps! - Hannah 🙂
