Considering MA Art Therapy at University of Chester

Hi all!!

I'm currently in my final year of my Primary Early Years with QTS undergraduate degree and beginning to look at postgraduate studies.
I love working with children and felt that teaching was the way to pursue that, however, after starting teaching training and working as a TA for two years I no longer feel the path is right for me.

I have a background in art, with my original career path plan being photojournalism and political photography, so although I do not have an art degree, I do have a GCSE, a-level and established background in both photography and mixed media art. I understand that the course is supposed to be quite intensive, if anyone could give me an idea of some of their experiences that would be great!

I'm leaning towards MA Art Therapy at Uni of Chester. How often are taught sessions there? How often is placement? And online it says the course is two years, at over £9k per year, is this correct? If so, how have people funded this as it is over the masters loan allowance.

Any information and experiences would be great, thanks!

Hi @sofiaanna2003

It's great to hear that you're interested in our Art Therapy MA here at Chester 🙂

More information on modules, entry requirements and fees can be found here - https://www.chester.ac.uk/study/course-search/art-therapy-ma/

The annual fee is £9,360 for home/UK students, more info can be found here - https://www.chester.ac.uk/student-life/fees-and-finance/postgraduate-fees/postgraduate-taught-fees/

If you have any specific questions we’d recommend reaching out to Melissa King, Senior Lecturer for this course - [email protected].

We're hosting a Postgraduate Open Evening on Wednesday 20th November. This event would be a great opportunity to learn more about the course, our campus facilities and support on offer for postgrad students. If you'd like to attend, please book here.

We asked a current Art Therapy student to provide some information for you. This is what Imogen had to say:
"Hi! In my experience there are students in my cohort from a variety of professional backgrounds, such as nursing, teaching and Psychology. It is not essential to have completed an art degree, any relevant experience of art making is likely to be helpful for this course. Whilst I have found the course to be quite intensive at times, I have found that the assignments are spread out well over the duration of the course and there is lots of support from lecturers. The timetable can vary depending on what stage of the course you’re at and if you’re studying full-time or part-time. In-person teaching can vary from 1-2 days per week and you will also attend placement for some of the duration on top of university days, however there are breaks from teaching in between trimesters! At the moment, placement for full-time students is 2 days per week for 1 year and for part-time it is 1 day per week for 2 years. The programme staff are open to student’s feedback about the course, so it is possible that some changes have been made for future cohorts. In terms of funding I decided to save up for my tuitions fees and worked part-time alongside my studies."

We hope this helps, but if you have any further questions we'd be happy to help! 🙂

Best wishes,
Becky
