This is my application for sixth form, and I need help refining it:
My name is XX, a year 11 student and Head Boy at XX, and this is why I believe that I am well suited to study Maths, Physics and Computer Science at sixth form.
Academics have been a priority in my school life for as long as I can remember. I truly value the fruits of hard work, and understand the importance of being ready to take on a challenge. Therefore, I believe that A-Level Maths would be an essential subject for me to study at sixth form. Problem solving is an aspect of school that I definitely enjoy; being able to display perseverance, intelligence and collaborative skills is one of the most satisfying parts of Mathematics in my opinion. I am especially interested in exploring the Statistics and Mechanics portion of the course, because not only does it allow me to broaden my analytical skills, but it also creates an overlap with some applied mathematics which would be yet another reason why I have chosen to take this subject, along with Physics.
Physics allows me to see the mathematics of the real world. Abstract concepts in Maths are fascinating in their own right, allowing problems to be solved in ways that the real world just doesn't allow, but applying mathematical concepts to man-made wonders such as rollercoasters, spaceships and supercars has been a fascination of mine since I was young. The quest for renewable energy through nuclear fusion is also a part of Physics that I am especially passionate about, and something that I would be honoured to contribute to in the future. Additionally, the (literally) astronomical aspects of the subject truly do feel like a sci-fi movie to study, and through this subject, I cannot wait to solve problems that can lead to a genuine, widespread impact on people’s lives.
Computer Science has always been the overarching fascination of my academic life. From learning to create indie games on Game Maker at twelve, to striving to become proficient in object-oriented programming at present day, both super curricular research and my studies of the subject at GCSE level have had an incredible positive impact on my career prospects, and I just can’t wait to further this affect thorough my A-Levels. Extracurricular activities that I have participated in relating to this subject include the Cyber Centurion competition at school, in which we were tasked with defending a computer system from malware using a command line interface, a coding camp hosted by Kainos in which I learned the basics of web development with HTML, JavaScript and CSS, Bebras problem solving challenges at school, and I am even currently learning to script using Lua on Roblox Studio.
My strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to the betterment of others have led to my appointment as Head Boy, a role in which I have the opportunity to make my fellow students feel safer, and more included. The leadership skills that I have developed with this role have allowed me to take on bigger challenges outside of academia such as public speaking, and event organisation. These experiences and skills have led me to believe that I have the potential to be an asset to your institution.
