Extra-curriculars in regards to uni applications

Hi all, just wanna ask is work experience more important than in school academic competitions in terms of uni applications ? Our school has a maths challenge for sixth form students every year. I have already done it last year and got silver. In this case, should I do something else like one more work experience, instead of doing the challenge again. I feel like it will only be useful if I could get a better result like a gold this time, or else one work experience and one maths challenge might be better than two maths challenges. Am I right ?

The most important things is meeting the entry requirements. It doesn’t matter how many extra curricular or work experience you have, you have to meet (and often exceed) the entry requirements to guarantee a place. The competition may support your entry if it’s relevant to your degree but if you can find work experience that’s relevant to your degree, do the work experience instead.

'Competitions' and Olympiads are not valued by Universities, or what they look for in applications.
Everyone does them, so they dont say anything special about you, or your interest in or aptitude for the subject.

Extra reading elc is far more valuable - suggestions by subject from Oxford and Cambridge - good for all Unis :
