Eligibility for home fee status?

Hi everyone, I’m a Y13 student looking to apply to UK unis for 2025 entry!

I was born and raised in the UK my whole life but moved abroad in 2022 so I don’t fulfil the criteria which requires me to have been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for three years prior to the beginning of my course. However, my parents still own property there and pay council tax, and we’ve visited twice over the past 2 years. Is there any possible case we could make to universities for me to get home fee status?

Hi there,

What country did you move to and when would you move back to the UK? Was the reason for the move on a temporary basis?

Thanks, Drew

I moved to Malaysia, where my parents are originally from. I’ll be moving back to the UK for uni (2025) and plan to settle there afterwards. The thing is I’m not sure if my parents consider it a temporary move, but my plan was always to go back. We originally came here for a mix of family and work reasons.

I’m not even looking for student loans, just reducing it to home fees would be enough for me!

Hi Miaris,

It's up to the university you apply to whether they charge you home fees or not. This isn't something we decide. You would be best speaking to your university directly to query this further.

Thanks,
Claire

I'd recommend having a look at the guidance on the UKCISA website. It is the same criteria that unis will use to assess your fee status.

In your case, I suspect it will boil down to whether your time overseas can be evidenced as being temporary, (maintaining property and regular visits to the UK are a good start).

This is worth checking, for sure - if you have any further questions just let us know here.
