Y13 - No idea what degree

I am currently in year 13 taking A-levels German, Physical education and Biology (predicted BBC respectively). I am interested in going to university, and have thought about 3 courses which may be of interest to me, primary education, paramedic science and nursing. I have work experience in both primary education and paramedic science, however not in nursing as yet. However, I know that if I receive higher grades than predicted (I endeavour to work really hard towards my grades), I would like to apply to either sport science or german with international relations/politics with the higher grades. I am unsure about what my next steps should be, and would like some advice. I have ideas of university, but am unsure about what to apply for in the meantime as I have a lot of decisions to make. In reality, I am anxious about applying to the wrong course as I am so unsure.
Sorry for such a difficult post, but I would be grateful for any advice.

Hi @voidhearts

I study Primary Education at BCU so let me know if you have any course specific questions!

In terms of trying to decide, it can be a really difficult decision so I would recommend spending time researching each course at the different universities you might be interested in. I would also recommend that you attend some open days as this will help you to get a better understanding of what it would be like to study each degree.
There is information about BCU's open days available on this link: https://bit.ly/4aHFLz5

Hope that helps!

Hi,

it's great you're already thinking about what you want to do and considering it seriously because it is a big decision to make.

I'd just start by saying that university is definitely not your only option. You could look at going straight into a job and working your way up, degree apprenticeships or even a gap year. Don't feel pressured to go straight to uni immediately if you're unsure about whether it might be right for you.

However, if you have decided that uni is the best choice for you then that is great! A good place to start would be break down what interests you about each subject you are considering. You could reflect on what you enjoyed about your work experience so far and continue trying to get more work experience if possible.

Next, it would be good to research your course options. Find out what you can apply for with your A-levels or would you need to do anything extra to qualify for a place. This might also help you realise which option interests you more.

When applying through UCAS, you can apply to 5 universities. It could be good to apply to a range of universities that accept your current grades and higher grades you are hoping to get. Also, there is always the option of getting a university place through clearing after receiving your grades. This means you could potentially change your mind late in the game or get a place at a place more competitive uni.

Hope this helps

Hi @voidhearts ,

I understand choosing the right degree for you can be difficult.

My top recommendation would be to look at the career prospects of each course, maybe even look at past students success stories. By looking at the careers, you can really delve into what your future may look like. Can you see yourself working everyday of the week in that sector? Is the salary what you desire? Is there many jobs available? These are just some of the questions you can ask yourself.

My next recommendation would be to look at the modules taught on each course. You may need to refer to various universities websites to see a general idea of what is taught on the course, as it may change slightly for different institutions. Look at which modules will be most interesting to you and really drive your passion.

My final recommendation is to choose a course you will truly be passionate about, as you will be spending most your time studying it for the next few years. Avoid letting letting other people influence you into taking a course you will not enjoy.

Here are some other ways to possibly help you decide:
Assessment types (Presentations, assignments, exams, etc).
Which universities offer the course?
Course quality at your desired universities.
Do you have the right qualifications for the course?

I hope this helped, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (Business and Management)
