Are you concerned about whether you'll be assessed as home/international fees?

Yes, I do want to be assessed as a home student but I will be applying for the permanent residence which will enable me to do so after uni applications close, but I have no idea how to do it

Apply before the consideration deadline. Your initial fee status will be assessed based on the current info but you can ask to have it reviewed after your permanent residence is issued.

e.g. the process at Birmingham >

Thanks for the information above. However, would I need to pay the initial costs as an international student for university and then make changes later?

Also, when do universities typically request your residency details during the application process? If they require this information closer to the end of the academic year, could I state that I have it and then provide the necessary details when I actually do? Otherwise, it seems like it would be a hassle to change it later, and there’s a risk they might not accept the updated information.

Typically you don't have to pay anything until you are formally enrolled, (much later and near to the course start). You would need to check whether there is any deposit due for international students, and if so, what the refund terms were.

They would only request further info if there wasn't enough info in your app to make a fee deicsion. In most cases there is - or they just default to international and it's up to you to raise with them if necessary.

Unless you are applying to unis in Scotland, thw fee status does not affect whether you receive an offer or not. So it is up to you when you provide the documents or info for them to revisit their fee assessment.

Yes, hypothetically there is a risk of them not considering you as a Home student after reviewing your subsequent info. But, if you don't apply by the Jan deadline then the course may close to applications and you won't even be considered for an offer in the first place. You'd have to wait a year or apply to less competitive unis/courses.

If filling in a form and providing some docs to save yourself tens of thousands of pounds is too much of a hassle, wait a year.

Hi, Thanks for this. For the deposit, does this apply to home students and if so when is it usually paid?

Regarding the info about my status in the UK, what is regarded as ''not enough''. When does the initial and the final fee assessments take place typically?

Also, could I still apply for clearing even if I were to miss the Jan deadline? Or do I need an application first to do so?

Finally, do you advise to contact each uni specifically and ask them about this issue?

Home students do not pay a deposit.

Initial fee status assessments tend to happen after you have applied. They'll either assess the information and make a decision, or they'll give you a fee status questionnaire to fill out.

Clearing should be a last resort, as you can still access the main application scheme through UCAS extra (you'll likely have a bit more choice and time here as well to make informed decisions).

Yes, you would need to contact each uni (or wait for them to contact you), as they each have their own processes (and even interpretations - I have a friend who went to a university because they were the only one out of five to assess them as home fees!)

You would also be able to apply this year and then defer your offer/place until 2026 entry if that extra year meant you would be eligible for Home/UK fees - and you could make this decision as late as August if you needed to.
