Thinking about dropping out

I’m currently in my first year of uni studying economics and i don’t think this degree is for me.
I’m worried that after the degree i won’t find a job and feel like if i had picked a healthcare degree id have a job after uni.
I keep hearing that the job market is really bad right now and i’m really worried i will regret picking this degree. it’s only been 2 weeks and i’m not enjoying uni and i keep stressing about the future.
1. How would i go about dropping out if i wanted to
2. is there any way to transfer to a completely different degree in the same uni
Economics is one of the most employable degrees. If you picked something like 2D animation, id agree with your concerns. Fortunately, economics is valued in many fields so you’d still manage to find a job, even if it wasn’t in something such as banking.

You can change degrees, and it’s best to do this now if you really want to, before it is too late. I would get in touch with your university and discuss with their advisors to discover whether the course will be right for you, they will also be able to guide you.

Make sure you are doing a degree that you have a passion for, as you’ll be spending all your time studying it and working in them fields in the future.

Hi there,

It’s completely normal to feel uncertain at the start of your uni journey. If you’re considering dropping out, the first step is to talk to your university’s academic advisor or student services. They’ll guide you through the process and implications. As for transferring to a different degree, many universities allow this, especially early in the academic year. You’ll need to check your university’s policy and see if spaces are available in the course you’re interested in, especially for healthcare-related degrees.

All the very best,
Daniel
Hi, I was in a similar position previously. If you get in touch with your personal tutor they will be able to advise you on whether it would be possible to transfer course. Some courses have pre-set entry requirements so you will need to have met those in order to transfer. You can usually find them on the university website. I would advise you to get in contact sooner rather than later so you don't have more work to catch up on from the course. Best of luck

Hi there,

Lots of people have these worries and it is quite common to feel like this after you have started uni as it is a big decision so it can feel like a lot of pressure to make sure you have got it right! However, it's important to try not to worry too much as there is no such thing as the right degree to take, or the perfect university experience and everyone's experience is different.

I agree that economics is a very versatile degree and you can go into a variety of things from this, so I wouldn't worry too much about if you have picked the right degree as it is very employable. You could also do a postgraduate conversion course if you really felt like you made the wrong decision after uni, so don't worry too much as there are lots of options available for you.

However, if you did really want to drop out and felt like you had made the wrong decision, I would talk to your uni help team about this. If you have a personal tutor or academic advisor, they are also great people to help you with this so make an appointment with them as they will be able to talk you through your options and this might help you to get a clearer understanding of what your options are which might help you to make your decision.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.
