Student Loan Eligibility

Are you eligible for a student load if you have previously studied abroad? My daughter spent 18 months studying in the USA on a scholarship and came back home due to ill health. She is now wanting to study in the UK and is applying for a student loan for this purpose. Is there any problem with this? is there any reason why she might not be eligible? Many thanks for your help.
Hi there,

What level of qualification was the student studying and did they not get a qualification? What nationality is your daughter and when did she move back to the UK? Did your daughter move to the USA completely or was it on a temporary basis?

Thanks, Drew

Hi thank you for the reply. She only did 18 months of study out there before returning home. No qualification were received in this time. she is UK national, British citizen. She moved back home in March this year. she was on a temporary student visa in the USA.
Hi there,

The course the student was on would it have been classed as an undergraduate degree? If they were there for 18 months was the student in their 2nd year of the course?

Thanks, Drew

Yes, this is correct
Hi there. Depending on the circumstances, the student may be eligible to apply for Student Support if they have been outside the UK/EU/EEA on a temporary break. Students will be required to provide evidence of their temporary break regardless of the length of time they were temporarily absent for.

Study abroad can be classed as a temporary break.

What would not be classed as a temporary break?

People who emigrate to another country outside of EEA/Switzerland

People who are unable to satisfy SFE that their break was of a temporary nature

Acceptable Evidence example

A letter from university confirming gap year

A letter from the employer on headed paper confirming temporary employment including dates

A contract from the employer that clearly shows the employment is of a temporary nature

Temporary visas or work permits

Where evidence has been requested to show that the student maintained a connection to the UK documents such as bank statements and utility bills can be reviewed

Thanks, Leah.

Hi Drew, we are struggling to find the links described above for the chat service or contact us ? are you able to send a link that we can click please or some other help?
Hi there,

Unfortunately I do not have any links to send you. If the student is unable to find the Live Chat option on their online account it may because of how busy we are just now. I would advise the student calls us.

Thanks, Drew
