I don’t like my university course

I recently started my course at uni and I’m really not enjoying it so far. I’m about 3 days in and have found most of the content quite boring and from the looks of it the further modules don’t interest me that much either. I wanted to switch courses on results day but when I told my parents they were very apprehensive of me doing so I didn’t go through with it. I believe the other course I want to do still has spaces and I meet all the requirements but it is in a different department so i don’t know if i’ll be able to switch. I’m really struggling to decide on what to do in this situation.
Ask both departments if you can transfer. Be open about your reasons, but obviously without being dismissive about the course you're currently on or the people who teach that course. If the university wishes you to stay on your current course, maybe give it a bit longer with a positive attitude to see if the course engages your interest.

I know about the procedure of transferring course but i’m just worried about my parents. I’ve mentioned to them that i found the lectures kind of boring but they just said it’ll be fine and i should give it some time

It's your time at university, not your parents' time. You should not make a hasty decision, and dropping the course after just a few days may be hasty, but it's your happiness and success on the line, not your parents'. You are, I assume, an adult or almost an adult. It's your decision.

Hi there,

It can be hard to know what to do in a situation like this where you feel as though you might be letting your parents down or if you don't think they will be happy with what you are doing. Ultimately it is your decision as it is your degree and future career. Try and talk to them about it and show them why you want to do it and what career you are thinking of going into after doing the course as this might help them to get a bit more information and it might help them to be on board with the idea. Sometimes if you demonstrate why you want to do it and explain why you don't think the course you are doing is right for you, they will be more supportive and understanding.

I agree with what has been posted on here already - if you can, try and speak to someone who is doing the course that you are hoping to transfer to as it might give you a bit more insight into the course and what it is actually about. This might help you to decide if you think the course is actually for you and you could also try and talk to the course leader or one of the tutors on the course and ask them any questions you have. I am guessing you have done research into the course and have decided that you would like it, but make sure you check what the modules are going to be and also thing like how you will be assessed are quite good things to look into, especially if you have a preference of how you like to be assessed.

It might also be a good idea to talk to the help team at your uni as they will help you with the transfer process and will also be able to help inform you if you would be eligible to transfer courses as you might as well find this out before you make the decision if you want to transfer or not. They should be able to help you with this or you could contact the admissions team at your uni as they may be able to help you with this too.

I hope some of this helps and good luck with your decision making 🙂
