Dental hygiene as a dental nurse

Hi!

I am applying to dental hygiene for 2025 and as I already have a degree, I am currently having to stop my dental nursing apprenticeship in order to qualify for SFE loans for this as a second degree.

This is because SFE will only provide loans for a second degree in dental hygiene if you are not already qualified in the same field.

I have accepted that I need to unfortunately take the risk and stop my apprenticeship and find alternative work in order to go to uni but I am worried that this will negatively impact my application.

Just wanted some advice on whether I should include an explanation of why I didn’t finish my apprenticeship in my personal statement or if I should email the uni directly to explain this or just leave it?

My reasoning is valid and I think it shows my commitment to my career but it’s still scary to think this might be the reason I dont get in when I have sacrificed my dental nursing qualification for it.

I have of course mentioned my experience as a trainee dental nurse but have not added the qualifications as I will not gain them so maybe this will look odd to them?

Any advice would be great!

Ellie
