Hi, I was wondering what you guys know about York and Sheffield when it comes to law / law with criminology. Which one is more respectable when applying for firms? I'm debating between these two and just wanna see what your guys thoughts are about this. Thanks for the support!

From my work experience, I would say that York is Defoe more employable just because of their problem based learning style and their more modern approach, I've applied for law there next year!

To give you some perspective my friends at York who have done internships on their Law & Crim course say firms really value York as the course is fully PBL - within your seminar groups you'll make 'mini law firms' with your classmates and argue a new case every week or so, meaning you're actively putting your degree into practice rather than just revising books etc. 🙂

Hi there,

It's great to hear you're considering studying Law at York! 🎉

As phh03 has said, the Law course at York uses a Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach which allows our students
to put into practice the theory they are taught. We also have the Baroness Hale Legal Clinic which students can get involved in and get real world experience working with 'live' clients directly on a range of topics. In terms of reputation, York Law School is in the top 25 in the UK according to the Times Higher Education's ranking of the latest REF results (2021).

But, I appreciate that I'm not a York Law School graduate, so I can't talk from experience. So, if you would like to get a better idea of what it's like to study Law at York, you could watch these videos from our students:

I hope this helps with your decision, and best of luck with your applications if you're yet to make them! - Hannah 😀

Average entrants at York for Law currently have higher entry grades than at Sheffield though. I wonder if you could have got in Birmingham, which currently has the same average entry grades for Law as Sheffield.

Have
Bristol hold
Offer Birmingham
Offer York
Awaiting Durham
Warwick Hold

I loved the visit to York the talk was very good but I’m worried if I want to work in Corporate law of magic circle firms rate York

The teaching process was a little alien to me and my parents who are solicitors and I wonder if it attracts Magic Circle firms ?
