Undergraduate Psychology Placements

Hi, I'm currently in my second year of uni and I need to find a placement in psychology - I don't really want anything in HR or anything like that, I'd really prefer something to do with therapy and counselling but they are so hard to find. Anyone have any recommendations for where I can find some good ones - preferably in the midlands. Please and thanks

Hey there 🤗

I totally understand - finding counselling placements can be really challenging, and the competition can be tough. Have you had a chance to check LinkedIn? I often come across a range of opportunities there that might interest you. Also, the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy has some fantastic positions that could be worth exploring!

I hope it was helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can also chat with me or other students directly through The Ambassador Platform.

Good luck! 🤩

Hi there!

I did a placement in clinical health psychology just last year 🙂 In general, you'd probably be looking at assistant psychology or honourary assistant psychology roles, where you'll possibly have the opportunity to observe clinical work (ie., therapy work). In my experience, you'll be able to find these kind of roles in the NHS or in hospitals.

It might seem daunting, but I recommend researching hospitals local to you, checking to see if they have a psychology department, and emailing them to ask if there is an opportunity for a placement student. Some hospitals already put these up opportunities on the website - its just a matter of searching for it.

Hope that helps

Hi there,

Amy here, an MSc Children's Psychological Disorders student at Cardiff University! I also did my BSc Psychology with Professional Placement at Cardiff, and found that my placement year was one of the best decisions I have ever made! It is so exciting that you're thinking of doing one too 🥰

Of course, placement opportunities depend on the university. However, from my own personal experience at Cardiff, we were provided with a big database of potential placement organisations. These were split into different fields of Psychology, including Clinical, Forensic, Educational and Research. There were also some Psychology-related charities. Therefore, there are usually a wide range of potential placements that you may apply to, regardless of your location! I did my placement year with the NHS Adult Speech and Language Therapy department in University Hospital Llandough; whilst this wasn't pure psychology, there were many psychological elements to it, such as communication, memory, and mental health.

You can email organisations, such as local hospitals, universities (for research placements), schools etc. to see if they would be willing to take on a Psychology student for a year. It may also be worth contacting the Psychology staff at your university to see if they have any useful contacts for placement opportunities!

Do you have any other questions relating to placements?

Good luck!
