Have I been too aspirational?

Hi

I'm predicted 3A*'s and am applying for History @
St Hugh's College Oxford AAA
UCL AAA
Durham A*AA - Possibly Contextual AAB
Edinburgh A*AA - Possibly Contextual ABB
Bristol AAA
GCSE's (Fairly mediocre (9's-5's); but I have mitigating circumstances that explain why)
Based on what you can see about the grades they ask for, does anyone think I have been risky/unrealistic or do you think I'll be fine?I've picked places I genuinely liked the course at and would enjoy the city / place, but they all hang around A*AA - AAA with possibly contextual for 2 of them but I understand these are never guaranteed.I would appreciate your thoughts on the matter and if I am worrying unnecessarily because my gut tells me, I'd honestly rather 1 offer from somewhere I love than 2+ with one of them being a Uni I’m not as enthusiastic about. I’d honestly be delighted be an offer from any of them.

I’ve heard Bristol tend to give offers quickly as long as your predicted grades are good (and yours are amazing) so I think you’re fine! Given your predicted grades and your spread of entry requirements across all unis I don’t think you should be worried.

Hi there,
That early Bristol offer would be an absolute god send. It's a uni i'd be very happy to go too so would mean all the others were bonuses

History is not a mega-competitive subject so you will probably be okay - and there are often places for leading Unis in Extra and Clearing

Hi I’ve applied for a lot of these unis and I have worse grades than you! I already have two offers (one for Bristol) so I wouldn’t worry!
Oh and I’ve actually also applied to history at St Hugh’s!

Hey, sounds great. I’ve got an offer from Edinburgh! Ive been waitlisted for Bristol with a year abroad, I think its because there are about 7 places per year 🤣

How was ur HAT and when do you think we’ll hear back from Hugh’s?
Good luck to you both. You will probably hear from St Hugh's about interviews towards the end of November. If invited for interview, you will hear if you have an offer on about 8 January 2025.

Your academic profiles sound fine. You should both be competitive candidates.

I have good memories of history tutorials at St Hugh's in my third year. I was at Wadham, but John Robertson, a Wadham alumnus who was my tutor for eighteenth century England was then a Fellow of Hugh's. He agreed to supervise a thesis if I stayed on for a D Phil, but I changed my plans and left academia. John retired a few years back as Professor of the History of Political Thought at Cambridge, where he's a Fellow of Clare.

Thankyou! And thanks for your consistently informative information on the general Oxford thread. You’re an authority to be relied on for nervous Oxford applicants!
You are kind to say so. I know some Oxford Dons and College heads socially, and can ask them about the process, and my nephew and then my daughter went through the Oxford admission process recently. I went through a different admission process many years ago, although you won't be surprised to hear that in some ways Oxford has not changed all that much since then. Oxford does change, as of course it must, but it tends to change slowly, and it is a great believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" (although it would express that sentiment in elegant Ciceronian Latin).

I wish you every success, whether at Oxford or at another good university.

Very interesting indeed!

Thanks
Possibly useful reading. This article explains a lot about history at Oxford. I was taught by Keith Thomas, which was exhilirating. Reading "Religion And The Decline of Magic" blew my mind.

I think my HAT went well but the more I think the more I wish I’d done things differently lol. It was better than i anticipated.
I am hoping interviews come out soon because I am so horrifically nervous.

I’m a little worried about my focus on provenance. I wrote my main body paragraphs, intro, conclusion and peppered bits of prov throughout, but then when moving onto it as a standalone paragraph, ran out of time mid sentence. I just did that last as I knew I could just write sentence after sentence about it, as the time drew on I started making little spelling errors so had to go back, which lost me time. Hopefully they understand, and/or my performance elsewhere makes up for it.

It’s easy to go round in circles, I just have to leave it in their hands now.

Yeah definitely, I think the wait makes it hard but I am sure you’ve done great! I didn’t write a provenance paragraph but included it throughout as an aid to my arguments so I wouldn’t worry. I was told that there isn’t necessarily a structure they look for so I think it will be alright

I did get one somehow but students at my school with better stats than me didn't so remember it doesn't mean anything about your academic ability, I'm sure you'll do brilliantly wherever you choose to go.
