looking for uni/school course choice advice

So…
I study (at higher level (scotland)) english, maths, classical studies, french, and art & design. I’m in S5, so i have next year to pick some subjects up.

Lately i’ve been kind of stressed looking at university courses, and i think i’ve narrowed it down to a few: fashion, classics, law, or interior design - Fashion and interior design being my top contenders (for now atleast)

What i’m worried about is actually being able to get into these courses: for example for fashion, i’ve never done fashion & textiles and for interior design, i’ve never done any techie subjects (design and manufacture, graph com etc.)

I’m able to pick up a couple of subjects next year but whether or not i could actually handle crashing some of these is the matter: like i said, i’ve never done techie subjects. And for both fashion and interior design, a folio is required when applying to uni, so i’m unsure if mines would actually be good 😭 I could pick up a national 5, but idk if that’s even worth it tbh.

Sorry for the long rant lol, i just really needed to get that out my system and I’m wondering if anyone has any advice? (i’m not particularly sure on what but oh well)

Hi! I'm Charlotte, a year 2 Graphic Design Student from Norwich Uni of Arts.

That's great to hear that you're thinking of taking a creative course at uni! Have you considered us?

You can request one of our prospectuses for free here: Norwich Uni Arts prospectus or find a list of our open days on our website.

Likewise, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Good luck on choosing a uni!

Hi @ivoryyroses!

Lots of schools/colleges don't offer qualifications in Fashion & Textiles, or in Design and Manufacture - so it's perfectly normal for students to enter Fashion and Interior Design degree courses from a primarily Art & Design background.

Have you considered doing an Art Foundation Diploma? It's a great way to test out different fields within art - whether that be fashion, painting, design or sculpture - before committing to a full-length degree course. An Art Foundation also gives you a competitive entry qualification into these courses, and helps you build a strong portfolio.

Here's a link to Kingston's Art Foundation course (lots of art schools across the UK will offer similar): https://www.kingston.ac.uk/undergraduate/courses/art-design-media-practice-foundation-diploma/

Best of luck,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
Hello,
It's great that you have narrowed down your options, fashion and interior design are great choices. University of the Arts offer both however, there are many pathways in fashion that you can choose from. London College of Fashion is one of our colleges that offer a plethora of fashion related courses from fashion design to journalism and styling. I would definitely recommend checking out our website for more information on entry requirements for fashion and interior courses as they don't all require a portfolio.

Good luck with your studies!

Hi @ivoryyroses

I agree with what the other posters have said, but wanted to add that we have some general advice on what Unis look for in a portfolio at this link https://www.aup.ac.uk/posts/top-tips-on-building-a-creative-portfolio

Hope that helps.
