Uni of Sheffield city accommodation

I'm applying to start at Sheffield in 2025 and it's my top choice, but I'm not too sure on the accommodation. I saw Ranmoor and Endcliffe at an open day in July, but I would prefer to live within the city. I haven't had a chance to see the city accommodation as it wasn't available in July, has anyone lived there/know anybody who lived there? I'm seeing not so great reviews online, but won't know until I can see the accommodation myself and I don't know when that'll happen.

Any insight would be hugely appreciated!
Hi there!

I lived in Endcliffe in my first year at the University of Sheffield and I would recommend it if you are looking to be where most of the freshers students are. I have a friend who live in Allen Court, closer to the city centre, and enjoyed living there, particularly because of its convenient location being so close to the University of Sheffield.

On our open days we provide accommodation tours where we can show you around. The next open day is on the 19th of October - here's the link if you would like to book a place https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/undergraduate/visit/open-days/book

We also have online tours of accommodation in the city on our website. Here's a link if you would like to have a look! https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/city It also has more information about the price of accommodation in the city and more about the area, if you're interested.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you need some more info.

Thanks so much for the reply!

Do you know that the city accommodation will definitely be available to view on the open day? The open day in July only offered tours of Ranmoor and Endcliffe unfortunately.

Hi oceandrift, I've been living in Allen Court (city) for a month now and I can tell you about how I have found it so far. (for context I'm in my first year and I'm 18 years old). Allen Court has positives and negatives, as does Ranmoor and Endcliffe.

Firstly, Allen Court is located within a 10-15 min walk of the city centre which is highly convenient. It gives you more freedom to explore and do things in the city. Also (dependent on what building you will be based in) you could be anywhere from 5-20 minute walk to your classes. For me, I am based in the wave, so I have to walk 20 minutes to get to my classes. However, some of my flatmates have classes that are based in the diamond, which is less than a 5 minute walk. One negative about the location is that Lidl and Aldi are 20 minute walk away. This can be inconvenient especially as carrying heavy bags of shopping up big hills is exhausting. Tesco superstore is a 5-10 minute walk which is much closer however Tescos is also much more expensive. The location has proven very convenient for nights out though, West Street (where all of the bars are) is a 5 minute walk away and many of the bars in Sheffield are within walking distances (I have yet to take the tram or bus to get to anywhere). To summarize, the location is very convenient.

The rooms are good. Our kitchen is a decent size, however there are flats with bigger kitchens (in terms of area not storage). The hobs are induction in all flats. The bedrooms are nice enough. Again, some bedrooms are bigger than others and some bedrooms come with desks that are bigger than others. There may be a few things that are broken when you arrive, for example my extractor fan was broken (the same thing happened to my flatmates). The kitchens (from what I have heard) are much bigger than the kitchens in Ranmoor. I'm not too sure about Endcliffe. I think with regards to the quality of the accommodation, Allen Court has the edge

From a social perspective, Allen Court is DEFINITELY less social then Ranmoor and Endcliffe. Many of the students at Allen Court are international students, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, however it does mean that making friends with them (as a British student) can be slightly more difficult due to cultural differences and communication difficulties posed by the language barrier. Furthermore, it appears that there are quite a few older students staying at Allen Court. I have met many students who are over 21, these students are nice but it would be nice to meet more people my age. Also your social experience at Uni will depend on your flatmates. I got dealt a pretty good flat, I can relate to my flatmates, we engage in conversation over lunch and dinner in the flat and we go on nights out. However, I have heard a lot of stories about people having antisocial flatmates. With regards to our neighboring flats, we haven't spoken a word to them. This is the same case for many flats that I've spoken too. However (from what I've heard), Endcliffe and Ranmoor are much more social in this aspect as there is much more interaction between neighboring flats. Allen Court is quite isolated, from a social perspective.

Overall, whilst the quality of accommodation and location of Allen Court may be slightly better than in Ranmoor and Endcliffe, Ranmoor and Endcliffe are definitely much more social. Part of me wishes I chose Ranmoor and Endcliffe. However, it depends on what you are looking for in an accommodation. How important is each factor? Hope this was helpful. Any further questions please ask.
