3 top tips for completing you first Uni assignment...

Been as we have just started the Uni term, you may have been starting to wonder how to best approach your first assignment.

My Top Tips:

1) Start early - gives you the most amount of time to plan and perfect your assignment.
2) Check your referencing guide - referencing can be difficult, especially at the start of your Uni journey.
3) Ask for help if you don't understand the assignment brief - the key to do well in your assignment is fully understanding your assignment,

I hope this helps,

Make sure you answered the question is a good one.
@WrexhamUniReps -

1.

Organise your time. How long until its due? How long are you likely to need on it? Between now and the due date, block out some of your non-timetabled hours to work on the assignment so you aren't tempted (as it is common to be!) to get distracted or put it off.

2.

Create an essay plan and organise your references - where will they go in your essay? How will they back up the points you want to make? Are there any alternative interpretations out there and what could this mean? Once you have a plan it will make writing the body more easy! P.S. please ask your lecturers if they are permitted/would be willing to check essay plans if you are worried if you've included the right kind of material (as I was many, many times! 🙂 )

3.

Yes, ask for help. You are not expected to know all the answers. If you are struggling, use your lecturers. They're there to support you and its in their interest for you to do well and enjoy your course. Go to their office hours, ask for suggested reading/directions for essays, what they like to see when marking.

I hope that helps, lovely idea for a thread 🙂 wishing you all the best of luck this year.

Yeah I agree when you start early you get alot of time to review the essay and even correct some of the emerging issues.

Hi Matt,

Love this question!

Ours is a little different because we offer flexible learning online!

1) Find out when you work best - our degrees are flexible so can be done at any time of the day, some people work better in the morning, or evening! There's no point pushing yourself to write an assignment when you aren't in the right head space!
2) Give yourself plenty of time and take regular breaks - It's easy to run yourself into the ground when completing assignments. If you've planned it into your schedule you can plan in screen breaks too.
3) Use all the support you can - you're paying for a degree and the services they offer alongside, so use EVERYTHING you can to get your money's worth. They'll give you different point of views you might not have thought of, and clarify things you're unsure of making for a better grade!

Hiya,

These are brilliant tips! I would also add - don't be afraid to reach out to your personal tutor! Whether you're unsure how to plan, write an essay, or even if you've gotten a bit of feedback and you're not sure what it means - do contact your personal tutor to ask about these things. That's what they're here for

1) Think about what makes a convincing argument. Do you have a strong, clear thesis statement? Does your evidence link back to the question and your thesis statement? Have you evaluated your points?

2) Assess the structure of your essay. Is your essay coherent and formatted appropriately? Is your argument consistent from the beginning to the end? Does your essay read well? Have you checked for grammar and spelling mistakes?

3) Familiarise yourself with your university's marking criteria. What will you be assessed on? And how will you implement these aspects into your writing?

Hope this helps!
