What are the academically strongest unis for English?

Apart from Oxbridge, which English degrees are the most academically challenging? Sorry if this is a frequently asked question but I could find the answer online.

Hello, :wavey: I’m guessing from your question that you are considering applying for an English degree - I assume it’s literature rather than language or creative writing? Although at Chester, there is an undergrad degree that blends all three strands so you will have a more rounded degree, rather than a specific lang, lit or creative degree. if you’re interested in this, the website is www.Chester.ac.uk and click on to undergraduate courses, then English.

Whilst I totally understand you want to study somewhere that has academic kudos, I think it’s important primarily to consider what you want from a uni. So ask yourself where do you want to study? Location is really important, would you be happy hours and hours away from home, or would you rather be somewhere a bit closer to make visiting during term easier? Would you be happy in a city or would you prefer a smaller town, or vice versa? Look at the degree courses the universities offer, they will all be nuanced depending on the tutors’ specialities, so have a think about what you’d like o study then look at their websites to see the modules on offer.
Another thing is to look at the support on offer for students, Chester has lots of library help and support, academic support and an amazing student support team that really assist students outside of their departments and this can be vital for some people. It’s also really keen on giving students a voice and platform within the institution.
Go to as many open days as you can, Chester has one on January 18th. These offer you the chance to get a feel for the uni and can often be surprising, as a uni you might have thought wasn’t for you can be one that you feel the most at home at. You have the opportunity to talk to staff and students and can look around the campus, far more insightful than just a website.
So before you go for the most ‘academic’ uni, just have a think about where you would be happiest as this is how you will obtain the best grades, rather than going to a uni purely for its reputation - if you’re not happy there you might not reach your full potential.

I hope this is helpful,
Good luck!

The combination of syllabus, environment, and people may largely determine how demanding you find a degree to be. If you're not inspired and happy, that could make more difference than the generally perceived difficulty of a degree.
