Reapplying while in First Year

I am currently a student in first year at university (I just started). My university isn’t how I thought and I have decided to reapply for first year entry into another university while remaining in my first year for now.

I want to see if I’ll get it on or not and if not I will continue with this degree but I am deciding to reapply now before I regret not doing so.

How do I disclose on my application that I am already a first year at another university? Will this be a disadvantage to my application and do I contact my old sixth-form for references or my university now?

Pls be nice and not disrespectful, just need some advice on UCAS.

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear that your university isn't how you thought it would be. Firstly I would recommend you speak with someone from your current university be that your academic advisor, a tutor, the careers team, welfare or anyone similar and speak to them about this. They'll be able to offer you some help, support and advice. You won't be the first or the last student to feel like this and at the end of the day they just want what is best for you so they should be able to provide you with all the information you need. As well as this, they should help you with the process of transferring universities or reapplying as they will may have set guidelines and processes to follow.

In terms of disclosing on your application or whether this will be a disadvantage asking someone from your university admissions team may be beneficial as well as for references. They will know from their perspective how disclose it on applications and what their application process and the way they allocate places is done to provide you some insight. You may also want to consider contacting the university or universities you are interested in reapplying to and asking whether you would be at a disadvantage or, if you wanted to, whether you could enter into second year after having completed first year elsewhere as this may be possible. Also, you may not have to go through UCAS and some universities do take applications directly so asking them this too may be easier!

Here's a link which you may also find useful: How to change your university course during your first year (whatuni.com)

Just some further advice too. Firstly, if you haven't done already try and attend the university you're wanting to move to on an open day or offer holder day. This will give you a better feel for the place and you can determine if you could see yourself studying there but most importantly enjoying studying there. As well as this, make a pros and cons of your current university - what it has that you like, what you don't like, what you would prefer, whether you want campus or city, accommodation, cost, facilities etc. and use this when looking to other universities. Comparing where you are now to other universities when you visit will really help you to understand and work out whether it would be better for you. Speaking with students is also something else to recommend. Most universities use something called Unibuddy which will allow you to find a student to ask questions about the course, the university, the surrounding area etc. so this too will help you see whether the university course is for you. Also, you may not be having the experience you thought you would have at your current university however I would consider your degree and the modules. If the modules on offer are ones you like or of interest then also looking into modules offered else where would be good and cross referencing if they offer what it is that you want to study or modules you like or enjoy. If you swap you may get the experience you like but may not enjoy the modules and be studying things you don't like or want to so that is also something else to consider. You may find a middle ground (a university you like and modules you like) but you may not so deciding which takes priority and what to do may also be challenging.

I hope this helps and hopefully you'll find somewhere that ticks all your boxes and provides you with the best university experience! If there's anything else you need or questions feel free to ask too!
