Diagnostic radiography mature students

Hi want to start studying diagnostic radiography in Salford uni, I wanted to know if unis are considerate towards students with small children. What are the placement times like and on-site lectures? Do you get an options of which days would best suit you for placements and esp if you have children at home?

If you are a mature student with children I’d love to know how you’re finding it all, studying life and balancing it with your children.

Email the department at Salford and ask for a copy of this year's timetable to give you an idea of what the time commitment is. It's unlikely you will be able to choose your placement times (as you will be required to work shifts when you qualify), but you might get priority for the placement location to reduce your travel time.

Hey @letsgetit,

Great to hear you're considering us for Radiography! We have real variety of students studying on our radiography course, so you definitely won't be the only person doing the course with young children. At the start of the year its always worth having a chat with the lecturing team, as they can go through the placement locations with you to see how that works for you, as they're keen on making sure students with childcare commitments are supported whilst studying. We typically do placements in blocks for the Radiography course, so you'll know in advance from the start of the year when you'll be on placement. In previous years, placements have been in November, January - April for first years, with your second and third years being more staggered (few weeks in, few weeks out), but I'd definitely say its worth getting in touch with our Radiography admissions team directly to see if this is likely to be the same for the year you wish to start in, as things can change!

Your placement hours can vary, and due to the nature of healthcare courses have to include some non-standard hours (night shifts, weekends, bank holidays etc), in line with the NHS requirements, but our tutors will make you aware of these well in advance. I would definitely recommend getting in touch with our enquiries team on [email protected], as they can put you in contact with our Radiography admissions team directly 😄

I would really recommend coming along to an Open Day too if you can - we've got one this Saturday (12th Oct) and then another on the 9th November (little ones are more than welcome to come with!), as our full tutor teams are available to talk to and go through any queries you might have about teaching, placements, childcare options etc. We also have our current radiography students there on the day, so you can have a chat with them about how they're finding balancing the course and personal life.

Let me know if you have any queries - always happy to advise!
