So I’m in my final year of uni and decided to move in to one of my mates’ house as they had a vacant room. When I checked it out a few months ago I didn’t see any problems with it. It was a bit small but all I really needed was a place to sleep and a desk to study.
I paid rent over the summer as that was when the contract started but I just moved in two days ago and have not enjoyed my time living here so far. There are several issues I have but there are two main ones which make it practically uninhabitable for me. Firstly, I found out that my room is where the boiler is located. Prior to moving in I was not made aware of this. As you can imagine, at frequent intervals it makes loud hissing and rumbling noises, especially so whenever someone takes a shower. This makes it impossible to study or relax unless I wear headphones. The worst part is when I’m trying to fall asleep and I just hear the drops of water falling at irregular intervals.
The other issue I have is the fact my room has poor signal reception. WiFi simply doesn’t reach my room. My housemates decided to set up a WiFi booster prior to my arrival and even with that an internet test yields 3mpbs. And that’s only if it doesn’t disconnect every 10 seconds. I’ve had to use my data for the past two days and even my network has poor signal unless I’m standing in certain parts of the room. This leads me to believe it’s not simply a matter of getting a different internet router.
I have contacted the letting agency which this property is under explaining these issues and they told me they don’t really see a solution to the problems. This prompted me to ask them whether I could end my tenancy prematurely to which they said no. I was told I would have to pay rent until I find a replacement tenant to cover my share of the rent. This seems an impossible task because I doubt anyone would want to live in such a room.
I’m assuming this room was never originally purposed as a bedroom seeing as the boiler is in it. It must have been some sort of storage room but the landlord realised they could make some extra money by renting it out to some desperate students.
Could anyone please tell me what I could do in this situation? At this point I am even willing to take legal action so I can move out of here. Thanks in advance
