The Student Room Group

Hello

Hello, I'm 22 and studying A level Chemistry and level 3 maths for exams in summer 2025

I'm looking to start A level environmental science and Accounting next summer and do those exams in 26 and I want to do an apprenticeship degree In Bsc Chemistry hopefully start in September 26.

I work full-time so there's not enough time to do 3 A levels all in one year. I end up cramming an hour's revision every morning before work and 16 hours over the weekend. Sometimes I read up on the train back from work if I feel like but I'm usually knackered as it's a 2 hour journey to work and I literally walk 3 hours a day in the commute.

I dropped out of college just before COVID and haven't really been in the right mindset to study but I was looking through my old a level books one evening and decided to give it a go so I literally started studying Chemistry in March but gave up in May due to the hot weather and I've literally just started studying again a month ago my best mate spurred me on he was saying it's study season again so I guess it made sense to open up my books and tablet again!!! And get off sonic and paramount+ 😂

In my spare time I game on my tablet, go on netflix, paramount or Disney, keep up to date with the sports, create music on Fl studios, do some exercise and some weeks I see my girlfriend it's a long distance, long-term relationship so I'm prioritising my A-levels at the minute!

I'm aiming for an A in Chemistry and an A in level 3 maths, just about getting there I suppose! Year 2 Organic Chemistry seems like a chore!

Best of luck with your studies! What’s level 3 maths? I did level 3 ocr fsmq so if its the same one i know of some really good resources for revising for it 🙂

Level 3 Maths is AQA Level 3 Mathematical studies, it's worth an AS so I'll be aiming for 20 UCAS points from it I don't any ATM lol

The course consists of Two papers
Paper1: (Data handling- sampling methods and data analysis, IQ range, commutative frequency, histograms and bar charts)
(Financial studies- AER,APR, Mortgage recurrence, Currency exchange, VAT and percentages, Income tax, national insurance and student loans) (Estimation- for example you might be asked estimate the amount of money secondary students spend on lunch per year so assume half the students buy a school lunch at the canteen everyday, 1500x0.5= 750 students per day, then days in a school year=52-12 =40 weeks ×5 = 200 days. 200×750= £150,000

Paper2C Graphical Methods which I've chosen to do consists of (Modelling graphs from linear, cubic and quadratic functions)(Rates of change, speed, time, distance, velocity, acceleration (graphs)(Exponential growth and decay graphs and functions and criticising methods)

Personally I much prefer the financial studies bit of paper1 as I love calculating big numbers and exponentials growth and decay are my favourite components to paper 2. Only just started doing past paper questions and the textbook is really wack honestly but what I've noticed with A levels you can't succeed without constant exam questions practice!

Oh that sounds really interesting- very different to what i studied though! I did level 3 fsmq add maths alongside my GCSEs and it was mostly just a level maths content (much algebra which i enjoyed, nerdy ik).
Ive just started my a levels in maths, physics and biology 🙂 So far im enjoying them all! Biology is really interesting but has a hell of a lot of content; physics is chill so far and not that hard to understand yet but im told it gets a lot harder so idk; maths is easy as I’ve already done most the content we’re doing and will be doing for some time- but it’s nice to have a subject i dont have to worry as much about having to work hard on.
Are you enjoying the content for maths and chem so far? Both my closest friends do Chem and say it’s really interesting but the concepts are all quite different from the ‘lies’ told at GCSE!

Ok fair, what is level 3 fsmq add maths worth? Does it equivalate to any UCAS points hmmm I'm not the biggest fan of pure algebra that's why I thought sod completing A-level Maths and ngl I was predicted a C and only got a D in my year 12 mocks. At college I done A-level Maths, Chemistry and Accounting and in my year 1 mocks I got D In Maths, B in Chemistry and B in accounting but I used to get into alot of fights got bullied a bit when I first started college and got suspended because I bust this guys lip and bust his cheek in self-defence as he had broke my nose and cut my eyebrow. lol I don't fight too often I get intimidated in confrontation but when I actually get punched I always try to punch back and I keep going and in 9/10 I have managed to actually connect a punch. Never worth getting hurt though or in trouble I guess but it's fun when there's an audience 😂 but yeah after my suspension and my mocks I just wanted to make music, do cover art and game on my tablet and drink beers and not being able to leave your house didn't help so I literally didn't leave my house for 3 years!! Then last year I applied for some jobs started off at a few warehouses picking and packing and unloading goods from lorries and I was self-studying IGCSE Accounting and got an 8 in my exams summer 23, found my girlfriend and things got exciting and I started to enjoy life again worked in a recycling dump for 4 months picking up nappies was grim but I was earning money so didn't care I guess and in February I found a job at Thermofishers laboratories making basic solutions, filling bottles up and packing boxes best job I've had as it's chemical based and the pay-rate is decent!
So college wasn't for me and all for the best maybe

Another long ass 2nd part to my reply

What are favourite types of algebra? I think I prefer finding solutions and applying them graphically like drawing graphs or putting data found from tables and stuff into algebraic or exponential equations and formulas. What is the set up with maths now, do you have to do a combo of algebra, statistics and Newtonian mechanics? How many papers are there?

I guess biology is alot of writing then? Not sure I'm that keen on physics I got a 7 at GCSE on of my best grades I've been told it's the toughest a level have you looked through your specifications and did you do an pre-alevel work over the summer?

Lately I'm pretty nerdy like I dream about my long study sessions over the weekend. 3 cans of monster, snacks and half hour breaks to cook my meals or sonic or netflix time ATM I watch Lego ninja heroes wicked watch! And at work I literally dream about my exam questions practice. I love short definitive and terminology based questions; like for example what is meant by "Quota Sampling" and describe stratification. Quota sampling includes deciding a Quota of people to ask in a survey and a set number of people but doesn't have to be and then stratification ( dividing a population like London or Kent into qualitative and quantitative sub-groups like Age, gender, ethnicity etc) then going to some busy locations and asking people questions, analysis and presentation of the results.

And the big 10 markers like for example why does Aluminium displace Copper from Copper(II) Sulfate solution, why does Aluminium form compounds more readily and why do Copper from complexes of different colours unlike aluminium. Aluminium has 13 electrons, 3 outermost shell electrons whereas Copper has 29 electrons and 11 outermost shell electrons, so Aluminium has more shielding of it's positive charge of 13 protons by 11 electrons l, Copper has less shielding from it's positive charge of 29 protons by 16 innermost electrons; consequently aluminium has a smaller atomic and ionic radius as well as lower ionisation energy so it can easily displace Copper from the solution. Aluminium has a higher reactivity given it's lower ionisation energy and smaller radius so it can easily be ionised by highly electronegative elements for example Aluminium 3+ ions can bond with four chloride ions to form complex ions. Copper is a transition metal so it exists in numerous different oxidation states, some of it's outermost shell electrons are in D orbitals, it forms dative coordinate bonds with ligands oxidising to form Cu3+ ions from Cu2+ ions or deprotonises, as the D-orbital electrons become exited or de-exited by the ligands and this changing of energy levels they absorb different frequencies of the spectrum of light and therefore change colour. Aluminium remains either colourless or white when forming different compounds.

And little time to socialise I guess 😂😂

A-level Chemistry is so much fun it's like a perfect balance of Maths, terminology and writing but there's some tedious aspects like electrochemical cells. Year 2 is much harder and I'm finding organic chemistry daunting but I'll soon find out how it is so at the same time it's kind of exciting! 😁🧪 I think remembering the practicals is gonna be the most challenging part for me! 🫤

Np, I dont mind long replies- means more for me to yap about!
I think my favourite type of algebra is probably just some good old manipulation- like i love being given an equation which at first glance looks really complicated but then if you simplify it down enough (like recognising disguised quadratics and using logs in some cases) you get such a nice solution. It’s just really satisfying!
Yeah we do pure maths and then stats and mechanics. There’s 3 papers: one pure; one pure and stats; one pure and mechanics. All worth a third of the total mark.
Biology is definitely a hell of a lot of writing- like if i make notes in class it’s easily 4 sides of a4 which just seems mad to me- i have very small writing as well!
With Physics i have heard that it’s very tough so that’s a worry for the future but at the moment im feeling alright about it. I got a 9 at GCSE, did all my transition work over the summer from my school (to be fair it was mostly reviewing triple content for the combined students) and i also studied from the CGP headstart book to give myself a feel for some of the new concepts which has been beneficial so far! I looked through the specs for all my subjects- maths most extensively to see what id already covered on fsmq but also bio and physics. The topics all look interesting to me at the moment so i hope it stays that way 😅
I can very much relate to enjoying a night in like you said. For me that would probably be if im allowed to eat my dinner in my room- my dad doesn’t let me usually but sometimes i can which is a whole lot better than sitting in the kitchen with my chaotic siblings! It’s a nice feeling like just knowing that you’re learning something having completed a task 🙂 I really like listening to music whilst i make flashcards- like i feel like it motivates me because sitting in my room essentially typing up notes isnt the most exciting thing i spend my time doing so some decent music is a blessing!
My friends who do chem are also really enjoying it- i can see why people like chem i just never really did. Electrolysis was the death of me- very annoyed its also covered in physics a level but to a much lesser extent so im fine with it mostly. Also having to remember stuff about how different ions reaction just didnt interest me the same way that biology and physics content did- i didnt see how i could apply it to the real world in the same way if you get what i mean. Also i struggle with practical work as i have sensory differences so i can get really overwhelmed which made some of the content hard to access for chem. Are you going to do the a level practicals? I think doing them would help you remember them if you have the opportunity- much easier to remember when you did something as opposed to a chunk of text i think.

Nice. Yes I'm guessing this website is a social platform for students that primarily emphasizes academic discussion I think I saw it advertise somewhere. So perhaps I'll try not to gossip too much about off topics but our
life's are orientated around A-levels anyway so
makes sense tbf. Ah yes equations in disguise I remember stuff like that it's been a long time since A level maths haha I haven't done differentiation for literally 4 years 😂 it was the same for me with 3 papers in that combination
I think statistics was my favourite things like good old standard deviation, variance and regression.

Yeah literally the same with Chemistry for some topics I can write up to 6 sides of paper. I like to do a chapter each week, as well as recapping on previous topics and exam questions. It's gotten a bit messy like for chemistry I have 10 notepads consisting of questions I've done and my specification notes and what's really annoying is that I've lost alot of notes so I'm trying to be a bit more organized now. I also have a printer; so I print off alot of material like Wikipedia definitions and articles, AQA specification, relevant questions from other study apps, exam papers etc so that also can get chaotic at times!

Do you get along much with your siblings and can that distract you from studying? I live on my own now I found private rental a few months after my contract at Thermofishers. Just a one-bedroom flat, I don't have a TV as I stopped watching TV at my mum's where I lived previously; like two years ago. I just decided that I don't need to watch TV when I can educate myself and entertain myself from application of android neither do I have a computer or any game consoles!

What kinda music are you into? Do you have set genres or are you eclectic in taste? Have you ever been to any to see anyone live?
I specialise in house and electronic music my most preferred taste, but I compose a variety of different styles: Pop, EDM, Ambient, hip-hop beats, random sounds and ambiguous music sometimes. I don't play any music it's solely just messing about on softwares on my tablet I do release on platforms occasionally. I got a taste for music from listening to a french productional house artist called madeon way back in 2015 so I decided to choose GCSE music where I was taught how to use softwares, different compositions genre by genre etc was brill only got a 6 tbf I done better in ICT got distinction in that.

Are your parents quite strict then? Eating at the table was always a thing in my parents household especially on a Sunday speaking of which I'm popping over to me mums later for the roast again another thing I've taught myself to do but have had many tips from me nan and mum! They're pretty chill though so I wasn't crucified for quitting my a levels lmao

Do you get over-stimulated or something? Is it because there's alot of visual information to retain? I can get easily distracted I need regular breaks I have found and I do watch some chem content on youtube. I will do the 12 practical endorsements at an exam centre in Birmingham it's gonna cost £2000 for a full week which is quite ridiculous but I think I have no choice and another reason to do 2 subjects in 25 as it will be feasible each subject is
gonna cost £700 for exams so a good portion of my wages will cover this! Hopefully we don't lose silly marks on practical questions! Will also be good if there's interaction Im not gonna get much tbf as I'm doing it hardcore tablet style lol literally trying to cover a whole chapter today in Chemistry today.

Yeah my siblings are a bit of a pain. They’re always coming into my room and talking none sense when im tryna do something! But they mostly go away when my dad tells them to leave me alone if i say im studying 🙂
My parents aren’t particularly strict but they dont really allow food upstairs cos we have pale carpets and my siblings are messy so it needs to be the same rules for everyone ig.
At the moment my favourite bands are AJR and The Score. I mostly like alternative music currently but also stuff from the 2010s edm era (especially avicii RIP). Ive never seen music live, i dont think it’d like it cos i dont like crowds or loud noises. Much happier with my headphones!
I didnt take gcse music but i did do art cos i like drawing and got a 6 in that- it annoyed me cos it was my only grade that wasn’t 9 or 8 but it wasn’t as much stress for exams ig so meh.
Roast sounds nice, hope you enjoy it!
Wow that’s an insane amount for the endorsement and exams!
Hope you have a good day 🙂

Oh I see. Do you lot have any consoles? Do you fight over entertainment? ( Disney+, Netflix, Paramount+ etc) That makes sense I'm a messy eater may as well wear a bib! 😂😂 I
have my own house rules like no spilling food
or drinks, no smoking. Feel really independent
now that I've got my contract and flat and the commuting 50 miles to work. I'm sorry to say I
haven't heard of AJR or the Score. Avicii was
amazing and I loved Swedish house mafia
takes me back to even primary school days
2013 etc. My old school favourites and current
include Calvin Harris, Disclosure, Rudimental,
the Chainsmokers, the 1975, Paramore, two
door cinema club, 20s favourites like Robin
Schulz, DNA, Disco lines, Ardee, AJ Tracey,
Aitch, Dua Lipa etc. Those are my big
mainstream people, I listen to alot of low-level
artists which hella of people haven't heard of.
I try not to emulate my music but I do sample occasionally and analyse the composition of songs I sort of pick up on different rhythms and flow.
Wow you got amazing grades!! You could go Cambridge or Oxford or imperial. I only got a 9 in Chemistry and an 8 in Accounting, 7 in Physics and 7 in biology, 7 in Maths, 7 in Geography, 6 in English language, 5 in English literature, 6 in Music, Distinctions in ICT and homework economics and 6 in PE I was well
disappointed with PE was meant to get an 8. I have like 7 average not too shabby.

Yup only had me contract for 7 months but I have enough now, I will make payments in late November. Not the best saver but manage to put away £600 a month and only touch that for emergencies like my exams.
Off-topic but my Chelsea have messed up real bummer 1-1 to Nottingham Forest what even! We play Liverpool next so my hope is that we can beat Liverpool to get back into title contention and start a winning streak and beat Arsenal in November I think everyone is starting to mess up now but that was a massive upset and puts us in a situation.

Well to cheer myself up I'm gonna have me roast catch up with the family and do another A-level Chemistry paper 1 later on perhaps that will neutralise things 😆

We have an old GameCube but no-one really uses it anymore sadly. My brother has some consoles as hes very into gaming but i prefer going on my iPad and dont game much. I like some games every now and then but mostly the more puzzle kind of games like minesweeper- doesn’t beat solving Rubik’s cubes though which is one of my main hobbies!
Yeah dw not many people have heard of AJR or the score. Lots of people know worlds smallest violin from TikTok though which is by AJR but its not even their best song so that’s kinda annoying! Yeah Swedish house mafia, Calvin Harris and chain smokers im all familiar with. The other not so much… i dont really like a lot of mainstream music but there are some i like, like benson Boone is pretty decent- not sure about some of his stuff but others are great!
Thanks! I worked really hard for those grades and im really proud of them 🙂 Ive been looking into where i wanna go for uni but i dont really wanna go somewhere that interview or anywhere in a big city so that rules a few big contenders out sadly. Your grades are really good too! You did more subjects than me i think too- never heard of accounting as a gcse or home ec either.

I done ok this weekend I got an B in AQA A level Chemistry paper 1 physical and inorganic June 2022 I was 2 marks off an A I got 64/105 and needed 66/105 very poor score on Saturday it was a dirty paper and i just under performed a bit lost silly marks, like missing out symbols, getting the electron repulsion theory wrong, dropping marks in reagent tests and getting reactions with phosphorus (V) oxide wrong and magnesium and phosphoric acid which wasn't listed on the specification. Last night I got an A in the June 2023 A level chemistry paper 1 I got a solid 78/105 so I'm pretty happy with that much better result as I was 6 marks above an A and I just seemed to perform a level better than Saturday. Did drop marks on the electrochemical questions performed well in the Ph questions on both papers there was like 15 marks on both so very nice. Electrochemical cells are a bit of a problem I really dislike them so much!!! 🥶 But there's never an ideal specification and exam in general lmao 😂 Now I know what I'm capable of and what I need to put more emphasis in.

I see, have you ever considered educational simulations, there's some nice ones. I use a few chemistry ones. I also like eurosim which is a European train simulator used to be a train geek when I was really young like back in 2015 it was kinda like a phase. What I'm wanting this weekend is a good science documentary to watch on netflix that would be sweet! Do you enjoy documentaries? Never really gave rubix cubes ago that was just a no I guess maybe I'm a bit boring 😂 I like Benson boone. Jorja smith is also a massive favourite of mine just really hits the spot! Recently I've been interested in the (Study house concept) chilled melodies, low bass, more therapeutic sounds can help me to relax and concentrate better.

I thought most universities had interviews? Would you prefer platform interviews on Android or just no interviewing at all? What ideas have you got about uni courses etc? Right now I'm not too sure but something southern would be ok. Well initially I was taking A level accounting at college and after COVID I decided to study IGCSE Accounting in 23 and sat my exams in 23 summer I just spent 3 months studying the course to recap. I
had wanted to do it at school in 2017/2018 my
school didn't offer so I waited till college. I just like using big figures. Billions, trillions, millions and have an interest in finance. I'm sure you worked a lot harder than me in year 11.
I got an email saying this thread got closed idk what happened
So last night I finally mastered standard variance, I feel a bit confident with it now. Initially I was struggling to understand the formula like essentially having to find the mean and square each data value individually and the summation of the squared data values and then the sum of all the values and squaring it and dividing by the number of values and then plugging it into the equation.
So I will do some more standard deviation questions of a few study sources and start on box and whiskey plots and some exam questions from Graphical methods paper 2 as well as paper 1 questions. Then with chemistry I'll look to go through the whole chapter 26 module, watch some YouTube tutorials, complete the summary questions and end of chapter exam style questions (consolidation) nd I'll do paper 1 physical and inorganic chemistry June 21. I have printed off some useful material for both Chemistry and level 3 mathsm

Wow it sounds like you've been so productive!

Yup working my way round things, with my full-time work and commute and the A levels. It's gonna be an intense next 20 months but it will be so worth it
Today I'm going to Birmingham to see my girlfriend I've had a discussion with her I told her I can't see her every week I just can't cope with it it's too stressful there's just no time with my A levels and I really want to get decent grades and this is my only chance so it's make or break

Enjoy Birmingham 🙂

Thanks travelling to Birmingham is actually really exciting it's just the time management that I get a bit stressed about now that I'm really serious about me a levels. She's expecting me to go every two weeks which isn't realistic so I think I'll go once a month.
