kings maths school admissions test

Hi, I am in year 11 and applying to sixth forms right now. I really want to get into kings maths school since they offer and focus on the subjects (maths, FM, physics) I want to do. I was hoping to know how difficult the admissions test is how to prepare for it. I went to the virtual open event and they said to do UKMT questions and the specimen on their website but is there not anything else that I can do to prepare? I also may go one of their taster days, perhaps I can ask questions then. please helppp !!!

I did an admissions test for a different maths school- hopefully it was similar. I agree UKMT questions will help you to prepare as for my test at least a vast majority of the questions were in the same style and given as multiple choice. They tested logical thinking and problem solving as well as maths knowledge. There were a bunch of longer answer questions later in the paper which were enjoyable but i didnt finish all of them so dont worry if you dont. I still passed. I dont remember if it was calculator or not but if not then learn trig values and some number tricks- standard ukmt prep stuff. Best of luck 🙂

thank youuu !! this made me feel less stressed now 😭. I will continue doing UKMT questions, but my teacher gave me a really good idea which was to ask chat gpt to create similar questions to ones on the specimen paper but at a harder difficulty and it workedd. And yess I memorised my trig values too!

I just joined kings maths school this year
So I did the admissions test last year and I didn't really prepare for it and I got in so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Especially because they don't care if you get a question correct, they wanna see how u think and do problem solving. But if u do wanna prepare for it, UKMT is the best way to do it.
Also this doesn't have anything to do with the admissions test but get ready to deal with a lot of imposter syndrome if u do end up coming to KCLMS, at my old school I thought I was smart but as soon as I came here I realised there are people a lot smarter than me☹️ but don't let that discourage u! It just means that u have a lot to learn!
I hope to see u at kings next year xx

ohhh, thank youu, this helped with my stress about the test. Also i felt the same way when i went to the open event, they were talking some mathematical theorems and everyone seemed to know what they were talking about except me 😭. I'll try my best with test and perhaps update you with the process. Thank you !!

I did the maths test last year and unfortunately didn’t make the cut to get an interview 😔but some advice I can give is do the specimen paper on the website but also do try and improve your problem solving skills because the exam really focuses on that and show your working really clearly ( i know it’s a bit cliche but they really want to see your thinking style) . Also try some ukmt questions and perhaps some level 3 further maths paper for an extra push and grade 8/9 level questions on maths genie. Good luck!

Is kings maths college really worth going to. I'm in yr 11 and am thinking of applying to other 6th forms like imperial, st doms, woodhouse, michaela, lae and Brampton (ofc kings maths too). I was wondering your opinion on these 6th forms and why you chose kings maths over them. Also what do kings maths offer that make it great (extracurricular stuff etc). Sry for the long response and congrats!

NO OMG when I went to the taster day this one guy was talking about like some random **** and that absolutely terrified me buuut I didn't let that keep me from coming here.
Also guess what now that i actyally know him ive realised that that guy isn't actually that smart he was just saying random stuff to seem smarter than he is, so don't let that discourage u from coming to kings. But the fact is that there are loads of smart people and u will get imposter syndrome, its just that everyone who seems smart isn't actually that smart:smile:
If u have any more questions feel free to ask me

I applied to loads of the schools u applied to as well and the reason I chose kings is because firstly they get rlly good results but also everyone here is just so lovely like I'm not the smartest person but everyone's always so nice and willing to help me and the general atmosphere is just so nice as well. Also it isn't what u expect like we don't do maths all the time.
Also they offer A LOT of extra curricular stuff like I've been here 2 weeks and I've already done like 3 workshops and 2 olympiads and compos and stuff.
Also if u get into kings, I don't think u should go to St doms and michaela just because ik people who go there and they absolutely hate it😭also if u get into kings I wouldn't go to imperial cuz kings is mych older so they have more experience ig and the teachers here are absolutely lovely and the imperial building is just not it😭
Good luck with the admissions test!
And I hope to see u next yearr and if u have any other questions feel free to ask me
PS: don't worry about the long response, that's not even long compared to the messages I send my friends

Hey I'm also in year 11, and it would be amazing if I could ask you some questions to help me about kings maths. How was the test and the interview (especially the interview , I'm more worried about that because I don't want to look really dumb and everything, but im not good with things like interviews!) . Also, how is the school in general?? Are there any particularly good or bad things about it? I'm applying to loads of schools and I don't want to choose the 'wrong' one! What university do you want to go to and what do you want to study (this is another crisis I have - I don't know exactly what career I want to do, I have ideas but not one thing). And does the school help you when applying/ choosing universities (e.g. giving you advice/resources etc)
Thanks a lot! (btw im so sorry for the long message and loads of questions!)

Hii
The test was quite similar to ukmt olympiad questions, ir was very problem solving based and they didn't necessarily want you to get the correct answer, rhey just wanted to see how u think. Also I would not be worried about the interview if I were you.
There were 2 parts, there was a personal interview which was completely fine ir was just like a conversation and there was a maths interview. In the maths interview, they taught u a new skill and u had to apply it to some questions which got progressively harder. Also I can assure u that u won't look dumb(im exactly like u lol and i was so scared of them thinking that i was stupid), during my interview I literally got like -1×6 wrong or smth and I made it lol, so I'm sure u will be fine. Also I don't actually know someone who got rejected after the interviews so I wouldn't be too worried.

The school in general is absolutely amazing, like the teachers are so nice and everyone else is so nice and so helpful as well. Like I'm not the smartest but everyone's always so willing to help me. And the teachers really care about your wellbeing also and the gender divide which is great.

I wanna go to cambridge and I'm not really sure what course I'd like to do yet but I'm leaning towards finance and business and stuff like that. And again I wouldn't be too worried about u not knowing what exactly u wanna do, I'm not really that sure either.

I've only just joined so I'm not really sure how much the school helps u with uni admissions but so far we've been doing loads of extra curriculars so I'd assume that they help u with personal statements also.

Also this is a word of caution, be aware that u will feel a little dumb here, the ppl here are some of the smartest ppl in the uk but u shouldn't let that get to u. I'm still struggling with that but hopefully soon I'll realise that I'm competing with my past self not ppl around me🤞take rhe smc for example, some ppl in my year literally got full marks but despite that me and other ppl were happy with our score
Dw abour the long response, if u have any other questions, feel free to ask me.

hi i’ve applied to kings for 2025 entry! i’m just wondering what’s the culture like? unfortunately i remember hearing they were a huge part of Everyones Invited and some awful things were said about their culture - I know they have a new head now and all the pupils seemed super nice when i went round but I’m wondering if that culture is still there ?

also my grades are currently a 7-9 and i’m aiming for mostly 9 and some 8 but my strongest subjects are definitely humanities. would being not as a math/science student mean that i was at a disadvantage during application?

sorry i know this is a lot of questions but my last is what are the subject interviews like? i get the gist of general interviews - talk about passions etc but the subject interviews confused me slightly. i think i picked English lit and philosophy.. would that be asking me philosophical questions or something or would it be about further reading i’ve done around a subject? thanks !!
