Navigating Your Faculty at DMU

If you're new to university life, you might have heard the term faculty a few times and wondered, “What exactly does that mean?” A faculty is essentially a division within a university that groups related academic subjects together. At De Montfort University (DMU), there are four main faculties: Computing, Engineering and Media (CEM); Arts, Design and Humanities (ADH); Business and Law (BAL); and Health and Life Sciences (HLS).

Grouping subjects into faculties helps the university manage resources more effectively, it streamlines processes, and ensures that students studying related courses have access to specialized resources and academic support. Each faculty has a dedicated advice centre, which serves as the main point of contact for students. Whether you're facing issues with your course, timetable, university regulations, forms, or if you simply have day-to-day questions, the advice centres are there to help.

Here's a closer look at DMU’s four faculties and what they offer:

The CEM faculty is where you’ll find courses that focus on STEM. As a student in the CEM faculty myself, I’ve found the support from the faculty advice centre invaluable. I’m constantly in touch with them for any problems I encounter with my course or for general queries. They are super helpful when it comes to sorting out university procedures and regulations. The faculty also keeps me up-to-date with events, some of which are social, others are academic, and quite a few focus on career development. In collaboration with the university's careers team, the CEM faculty regularly shares information about internships and job opportunities in industries that are relevant to me. Thanks to this, I’m now working as a Faculty Ambassador and an engineering research intern which has been incredible for me.

2.Arts, Design and Humanities (ADH)

3.Business and Law (BAL)

4.Health and Life Sciences (HLS)

Regardless of which faculty you belong to, I highly recommend familiarising yourself with your faculty’s advice centre and the resources they offer. University life can be unpredictable, and you never know when you might need help with something as simple as understanding your timetable or something as crucial as applying for a placement or internship. Personally, I’ve found it incredibly useful to stay informed about faculty events, many of which are geared toward professional development.

Thanks to the CEM faculty’s regular updates, I’ve attended networking dinners, industry talks, and internship workshops. It’s been invaluable for my growth as a student and for my future career prospects and will probably be the same for you if you make use of the services facilities provide.
I hope this helps and if you have any more questions or relevant information to add please pop it down below.
