Choosing between two Cambridge colleges

Hiii I’m hoping to apply to Cambridge for economics this year but I’m having problems choosing between Magdalene and caius college.Whilst I prefer Magdalene, many people I’ve talked to have said to choose a college that accepts a larger number for the subject, and magdelene takes in around 3 a year whereas caius takes in 6. If anyone has any suggests, please put me out of my misery…

From what I've heard, there's no point in playing a numbers game and if you like Magdalene more then you should go for it! Also even if you were to play a numbers game, despite Caius taking in a larger number of people, it is also more competitive (at least it was for 2024 entry!). For Economics entry in 2024, Magdalene made 3 offers and had 18 applicants, whereas Caius made 8 offers but had 62 applicants. Obviously the number of people applying varies each year, which is why I don't think it makes sense to look at the stats. If I were you, I would just go for Magdalene since you like it more.

Disclaimer: I am also applying to Cambridge this year so take my advice with a pinch of salt since I'm no expert.

I would advise against relying on admissions data. The only difference it would make is in terms of your final cohort size and if you have a personal preference regarding how many other Economists there would be in your college.

People who say go for the larger student cohort size are people who simply prefer having a greater number of peers. Conversely, there's an equally valid choice to go to a college with a tiny cohort and get much more of your DoS time and attention, and to not struggle for library books etc. It's an entirely personal preference - do you want more peers in your college, or do you want more of an academic's time and attention?

I believe it should ultimately be your personal decision, one that feels right to you and aligns with your goals. The key is not to let yourself get overwhelmed or stressed by outside opinions. It’s important to take things at your own pace and do what feels manageable. The same applies when working on something as challenging as a dissertation. If it feels too much to handle alone, services like ukwritings.com/dissertation-services can provide the necessary support to help you manage the workload and get through it without feeling too much pressure.
