Hi,

Congratulations for getting a place at university for studying Children's Nursing!

I'm currently a 2nd year childrens nurse at Wrexham University, through my experiences so far I have found the course has been amazing. Whilst the operations may vary at Wolverhampton University some of the basics will remain the same. 🙂

In terms of the university side of things, you will find that you need to complete 2300 hours of both theory and placement hours respectfully. This flies by - especially on placements!

Your responsibilities will vary from each university and placement area alongside your year of practice. For example, last year I completed observations, documentation, attended with staff to A&E, and went to watch an operation in theatre. All of these have been amazing experiences and allowed for a professional relationship to be built with the patients and their families. It's amazing to be a part of a childs journey through their time in hospital or in the community.

Whilst there are emotional times I found that the universities and the local healthboards support teams have been amazing. Additionally, by having de-stresses such as arts and crafts as well as playing games I have been able to relax following stressful shifts, which hopefully you'll be able to do to!

Don't let the fact that you're a mature student hold you back, you've got this far and you'll do amazingly!
There are many mature students returning to education with or without children; some of the students at Wrexham University have shared what it's like to be a mature student and I've attached this blog below - whilst it may be different to Wolverhampton Uni hopefully it will reassure you!

Good luck out there and if you have any questions let me know 🙂

There's many other mature students too so just find your crowd! Obviously most of them will be younger but as with most things in life, you'll find your way through it. By the time you're in your 2nd/3rd year, everyone's in the same boat. Hope this helps

Hey

I recently started the Adult Nursing program this September at same university at the moment all three fields have lectures together, so thought I’d share some insights that might be helpful. I have found my experience so far to be really really positive. As a mature student with a young child myself , I had similar concerns before starting, but the balance has been manageable. The first four weeks consist of an induction period, so you’ll be on campus most days 9-4. After the induction, we are typically on campus only 2-3 days a week, with the rest of the time dedicated to do you own independent study. This structure remains in place for the first semester. In the second semester, we move into a 12-week placement, working 40 hours per week, including one day on campus, so placement hours come to about 32.5 hours per week.

I hope this information is helpful as you prepare for your studies.

Super helpful, thank you! Can I just ask, when did they give you your timetable?

Your timetable for semester one should be updated approximately 4 weeks before starting and then once you have started, during the first week you should recieve the timetable for the whole year, so you’ll know when all your assessments, holidays and placements will be, so you can plan ahead.

Are there assignments and exams during your placements too? Or mainly before/after?

Hi

I’m not entirely sure, we are not told what and how we are assessed until the units are introduced.
