a level chem

Hi! I’m coming up to choosing my a levels and really need some advice on what subjects to choose. So far I know Im picking biology and psychology and my third subject will either be chemistry or politics. I’ve heard a lot of chemistry horror stories and I don’t know what to do 😭

To give a bit of context, I really struggled with my mental health during y10 so my attendance was 70% and I didn’t do a drop of revision and came out with a 5 in my mocks which I don’t think is too bad considering my circumstances.

Im currently pretty drawn to courses like dentistry and medicine so obviously need to choose chemistry and politics won’t help me much with the future but I don’t want that to be the sole reason I choose chemistry so any advice would be greatly appreciated 🫶
hey! i’m a couple weeks into year 12, and i can say that out of all my a-levels, i’m finding chemistry the easiest. i do maths, chemistry, and physics, for context

i’ve always enjoyed chemistry, and i’ve been fairly good at it (7 at gcse), and so it was a pretty obvious choice for me, as well as the fact i want to go into engineering. the future is definitely something you should consider when choosing your a-level options

your gcse grade does sound good, especially considering your circumstances. one thing i would consider, however, is if your course has any requirements? i know for my sixth form, you had to get a 6 to take any subject, but then again i go to a grammar school sixth form. i know other sixth forms and colleges have lower requirements, so that might be something to look at

i say don’t let the horror stories put you off. i’m really enjoying it, and i actually find a lot of it makes sense. if you do end up struggling with it, the cgp books look brilliant

all the best, and i hope it goes well!!
You should definitely do Chemistry it's more valuable and interlinks with Biology. Chemistry will give a variety of different skills (Analytical, scientific, Graphical, modelling, Chemical, Numerical in depth understanding of the fundamental breakdown of chemistry and the mother of science, I like to say Physics is the father but Chemistry governs both Biology and Physics and of course every material is composed of chemicals) Chemistry will give you self-discipline as it takes alot of practice and perseverance and alot of things start to make sense in the second year things that you found daunting in the first year and the more that understanding and recognition comes into play the more motivation!

This is so helpful thank youuu! The course requirements are a 77 since I don’t do triple but I’ve been working hard recently so I’m confident I can meet that!

Hi,
As a current A level chem student (Yr 13) as long as you consistently revise and keep on top of your work (my school has these booklets of work by topic,so I mean in terms of solving difficulties when you find them and not letting them build up)you should be ok in chemistry.
Hope this helps😅
